Sea Trials
Under sail:
The Cooper handled quite well. Unfortunately wind was very light, 5- 10 knots at most, so we didn't see
much action. Mainsail is fully battened with tensioning straps, sail shape is phenomenal even in light air.
110% jib is on one of those Selden continuous wheel furlers instead of a roller drum type. Simpler mechanism
and very easy to handle with 1/2" furling line. Mainsail halyard and reefing lines are all at the mast
making it necessary to go forward to raise/lower the main and reef. This needs to be changed so the
main, at the very least, can be raised and lowered from the safety of the cockpit. I am spoiled by
the setup we have on the MacGregor.
Motoring:
The 2 cylinder Volvo Penta with saildrive is fairly quiet and exhibits very low vibration. Made six
and one half knots at WOT (2500rpm) over ground against about a 2 knot tidal flow. Approx five knots
over ground at 1800rpm. Lock to lock is about 3 1/2 turns each way on hydraulic steering. Turning
radius looks like about 25 feet. Brought her to a dead stop in the water alongside someone else's
mooring buoy just to see how she handled. Very responsive and positive helm. Acutally really liked
the feel and told Janet it was easier to handle than the Beneteau's we've chartered.
Pros- great visibility, handling, comfort
Cons- Halyard/reefing at mast, small cockpit
I know this isn't a MacGregor thread, just want to share the fun of doing this!
(Bought a nice brass Barometer in Cowichan Bay and a SS latch for the barbeque on the the Mac this week. The mods continue!)

Re: West coast\ Salt water upgrades?
Mechanical inspection:
Wow was that worthwhile. The mechanic identified several small items that need
attention soon. The big one: We secured the boat tightly to the dock. He
engaged fwd and ran the diesel up to full rpm's for probably ten minutes. At about
the three minute mark water started bubbling up in the plastic anti-freeze overflow
reservoir. Ouch. He suspects, and I agree with my fingers crossed, it's likely a head
gasket.
The owner had already reduced the my price more than the cost to replace the gasket
and has another unconditional offer for full price on the table. So I decided to
take the chance and closed the deal.
I have the marine mechanic ordering parts today and will have the work done in
the next couple of weeks while I'm back in Calgary.
It's been quite a learning experience if nothing else and strongly reinforces the need
to consult experts whan making a purchase of this magnitude.
Now, no more posts about the Cooper, it's back to the shop to work on old faithful!
It will be refreshing to tinker away with something I can get my head around and am
comfortable with.

as a mulitple boat owner myself,
I like to hear any and all comparisons you might make about the boats. Gives me ideas to improve my X,
(which I am finding extremely difficult to part with it seems.)
