I have done a few trailers over the years and the trailer guys I deal with call the center device that looks like a see-saw a "walking beam". It is a fixture welded to the frame that has a beam with a center pivot. The beam has an eye on either end to which the spring is bolted. This lets the axle walk over an object with more flexibility. This is the best I can describe it.

Thanks, It makes sense now I know what that piece is. I've always heard it called an equalizer,

We bought ours off of Craigs list in Phoenix (400 miles from us) after a friend who has had a number of Suburbans over the years and was a roaming service guy for a company that contracted work to GM took a look and test drive in it.

He told us that we would fall in love with it. I never thought we would, but we both did in short order. We had to make the 700+ mile trip to Long Beach a couple months ago and justified making the trip in the Suburban (17 mpg) vs. a V-6 Buick we have that gets 30 mpg, but saying we would sleep in it at a campground near Disney Land where Ruth's son lives. It is far more comfortable than the Buick on long trip.

Out justification for taking it over the Buick feel apart after a couple days when we found out we could stay at a Motel 6 cheaper than the trailer park :( . We still didn't regret taking the 'burb though. We have to go back in March and will take the Buick though :? .

c ya and don't forget, take care of it and it will go 300,000 miles,
