Thanks again - more good stuff. It was not my intent to turn this into a political discussion or even one about firearms (I'm on other forums for that! ). I carry because I can, and I have been the victim of an armed home invasion with a few scars...not paranoid now, just realize that stuff like that can happen, and wondered if it can be an issue when, as one of you said, you can't just pick up the phone and dial 911. I figured that as many people as were on here, and as much experience as is represented by you all, there should be a good indication of what the environment is like out there.

I even like the idea of wasp spray...although I would probably reserve that for in a marina slip when the "drunk guy" scenario could happen...anchored anywhere someone has to reach me by boat I would consider intentional.

Sumner, Catigale, Jim and the rest - thanks for all the encouragement - I think I'll start with "happy and ignorant" and go from there...treat it no differently than when I'm tent-camping or road-tripping with my wifey.

Most countries outside of the USA treat handguns and long rifles much more strictly than in the US - in the Bahamas you had better declare all of your weapons and ammo (counted correctly to the last round) or deal with severe penalties, for instance.

we have a technical bucket when at sea and use the space for foul weather gear and general junk and clutter that you sort of want at hand but don't want to be tripping over. I've found the sink is an excellent place to stow a decent sized cqr anchor. Drop down ikea hanging drawers on the left arranges a multiude of gear and all coats n other hanging things go on the rope. I've got the portaturdie in the shed for when we do inland waterways, but that's not come up yet.
Btw 'crap' in british english also refers to mess of a non-oganic nature.

For those of us in a somewhat damper environment than NSW (where I first sailed.. Dad even did the syd-obart a couple of times including the one that went badly wrong) it can be of major benefit to be able to get warm and dry quickly, especially as we tend to go out for at least a week per launch.
Hence the ducting behind the anchor locker is part of the below, the link gives some more details.

I just taped a copy of Road Soldier's pic with the bag over his head to my companionway door at night....the bad guys took one look and dashed off....

I've got another one to go in with a double remote probe that I'll position deeper when I finalise some of the other installations. We don't use the rear as a berth since sorting the front end out. This detector will actually become the backup.

Or better yet buy one RBOW (Redneck Bag Of Wonders) from me for small nominal fee of $999.00 USD. Each one comes with complete instructions:

Personally, I don't carry a gun or a knife on board. Your average goof has already worked out how to react to either of those. I carry a hatchet... you come out flailing that around and screaming like a loony and the goof has NO idea how to handle it!
