What happened may not have happened if you had something like this...
And if i ever have the chance at owning another :macm: it will be the first thing i modify.,,,What is there is just too weak.

Counterpoint - on a Mac, that step would have torn about a 2 foot square whole in the topside.... :| :| :|

I am No Engineer But I have seen things like that go REAL Bad!!
Forestay wears through ? Mast is coming down . That support is beefy but remains a pivot point..
Not referencing puggies craftsmanship
At work we call that Gorilla welding.. Someone makes something huge in the middle or at an attachment point and often complicates the real issue..
I agree with Cat .. That could cause , could have caused in this situation a..... Huge repair and..... a lot of down time and ...a lot of cost $$$$
Laser Light Level? I own one but Why would you need one for this application ? When a string line would accomplish the exact same thing?
Laser Beam Light Levels have their purpose No Doubt , we use them often .. but its not IMHO even worth the set up time..
