Big thick, salty, sourdough PRETZELS - - - but, alas, my cardiologist says I can't have them anymore :(

Rick

PS I'm thinking of getting a new cardiologist, but mine is the Director of the Heart Failure Clinic.

Nutritional value is one thing, but my weekend first-breakfast treat while camping / cruising is / used to be is pan-fried eggs, potatoes & SPAM. Used to be because due to recently diagnosed food allergies, my elmination diet excludes two of the three!

TWINKIES
Mike Haub, a nutrition professor from Kansas State University started on what he called the “Snack Cake Diet” last August 25 and recorded his results on his Facebook page called “Prof. Haub’s Diet Experiments”. He started at 210 pounds and an “overweight” Body Mass Index of 28.8. His “diet” contained Hostess Twinkies, Little Debbie cakes, Kellog;s corn pops, and Cool Ranch Doritos chips.

The results were quite amazing after two months from the experiment. Haub’s weight dropped to 174, while his BMI dropped to 24.9. His “bad” cholesterol went from 153 to 123, while his “good” cholesterol went up from 37 to 46 points.

There you have it, folks. Twinkies washed down with a liter bottle of Coke or Pepsi. Delicious, nutritious, and I have heard they have a shelf life of 50 years with no refrigeration required. The “Perfect Food” for your next blue water crossing.

Original hormel chili with the pull top lid. Pack it along the centerline and you've got both food and ballast! Heats up in the can on the alcohol stove.

I go to Costco and pick up beef jerky, 18 pack of eggs, some whole nut packs and some whole grain snack bars. The eggs need to be bought at least a week ahead of time, then hard boiled, shelled and packed in water. Hard boiled eggs last a week in chilled water after shelling are very easy to eat and make no mess. The beef jerky has been a long time travel food in America. (Especially the teriyaki style?) Whole nuts are just plain healthy food and the whole grain bars give you the impression that they are a delicious desert even though they taste like cardboard.

Years of sheep hunting and wandering in the mountains and cooking on what is more or less a blow torch (pack stove) and being able to turn out everything from pancakes to stuffed apple pies (basically a grilled cheese but with cream cheese and your choice of pie filling) a butane cook stove that has flame adjustments in stead of 'on' or 'off' opens up worlds of possibilities. A fav is always crab artichoke dip (crab, cream cheese, canned artichoke, green onion, red chillies, mayo topped with shredded parmesan in an aluminium tin cooked over the fire (low on the stove or the bbq) till it bubbles but before it burns (pre-make). Quesadilla's in the pan or on the bbq, pic a cheese and a meat and some onion and peppers also add pineapple or mango to balance the hot peppers. Last week we brought bison guniess stew, throw potatoes, onions, bison/beef/moose/deer ect, celery, carrots, good handful of barley salt pepper and pour guniess beer over til things float and cook on low to med-low for 8hours (but a slow cooker with a timer) put in a sealed bucket grab a bag of buns and you got good food for a couple of days. A good hot meal can make the driving rain/snow disappear and be the difference between a miserable time and an unforgettable time.

A good western griller steak and some large scallops wrapped in bacon.. Use a red pepper pesto to marinate the steak, and use olive oil and dill or rosemary for the scallops cooked on the grill with some skewers. A baggett is always good, and some thinly sliced scallop potatoes with butter and Parmesan cheese, wrapped in aluminum foil and grilled. We also are big fans of asparagus wrapped in foil with a little butter, salt and pepper. However the asparagus really makes the pee bucket smell like asparagus when used.... :P .....

For quick snacks we like jerky, peanuts, and dried fruit,,, especially the dried cherries.
