This got me curious. I am using my first name, Herschel, as my "signature" on this forum. Sometimes I use my name in online forums, but mostly I don't. Usually, I don't think of symbolism as much as trying to think of a "user name" I will remember easily that is also relevant. My user name on the O'Day Owners forum is "Oldspritesailor" because I am, literally, an "old Sprite sailor". I have a 55 year old O'Day Sprite that we have had in the family for the whole life of the boat. I reflected on the date that I signed on this board, September 28, 2005. It was just two weeks before my 93 year old father passed. I had just visited him in Tennessee and said my "good bye's". Relevance? I am Herschel Junior! Juniors are big in the south; we take it pretty seriously. I was always known in the family as "little Herschel" even though I was taller and heavier than Dad! I suspect that on September 28, 2005, I was feeling pretty proud of my first name and just wanted to "put it out there" so to speak. Here is Herschel "Senior" being presented an American flag flown over the Capital Building in honor of his 90th. Hats off to Dad...

It was quite a flame! Dad had been active all his life, working as a country dentist until well into his 80's, even farming on the side with a few head of cattle on a small spread well into his 70's. After he blew out the candles, he remarked, "Well, they tell me the sex is best after 90!" And smiled real big! My step-mom blushed and hushed him up! I just hope I can keep sailing at least as long as he practiced dentistry! Many thanks.

My alias is OLD SALT. It was given to me by a few friends because I had been sailing for so many years. An Old Salt is an octogenarian who sits on the wharf all day and tells sea stories. I'm not quite there yet. Freedom is the name we gave our third boat because it was built in 1976, the bicentennial of our breakaway from Mother England. Launched January 2, 1977. I used Taime1 for a number of online applications. I don't really know where it came from, I think it dates back to a licence plate I once saw on a car in high school. I like it because its double meaning. You can interpret it as a derivative of "one who is tame". I am pretty tame overall. OTOH, you can also interpret it as a directive, to tame something else like a wild animal, or to tame a mountain as you downhill ski it, tame the seas as you sail them, etc...sort of like a quiet, somewhat hidden intensity or competitiveness. Kinda cool, the more I think about it.

Triple meaning, actually.... "T'aime" is the familiar form of "Love you" in French.
