I have a 1982 Macgregor 22 which I got for "free" from the prior owner. The boat came with the hull, mast, boom, mainsail, jib, spinnaker, fushions, trailer, depth sensor, and a 7.5HP Mercury OB. As the boat was abandoned in a marina storage area for over 4-years I quickly learned nothing is free... The package is basically pretty good but I've replaced the pine woodtrim, detailed the boat, replaced all blocks as they were dry-cracked and repaired a 12" crack in the hull immediately aft of where the hull rests on the starboard bunk. Oh, and rewired the boat and upgraded to LED nav lights. To your issue. There is a piece of steel which runs inside the bow that the eye bolt attaches to. In order to access the steel you will have to make a cut into the forward bulkhead of the bow compartment. My boat "came with" a square hole there which provided me access to the bow to mount my new LED light and run new wire aft to the battery compartment and new electrical panel.

There are plenty of posts on how to fix the bow eye. You may need to cut the interior a little to make more room. Basically remove the nuts on the inside and pull the assembly all the way out. Clean out the rotted wood as best you can from the inside. Then install a new backer. Either glassed wood or some sort of plate. Re drill and bolt back down.

I need to do this as well. Project for this year.

Should i cut into this?

Yes, you are going to have to cut into the fiberglass interior liner to get to that U bolt, also called a bow-eye and figure out why it is loose.

You might find that it is set into plywood that is all rotten from water intrusion - welcome to boat repair.

The bow-eye needs to be pretty strong as you crank the boat up onto the trailer with it. If you don't back it well with wood/washers/plates it will rip out.

How are you at working fiberglass?? Time to study up!
