John,

In 1992 we took our 11 and 12 year old sons to see it (wind). I loved it, those boys are now 41 and 42, and still complaining that I made them sit through it. I liked it. :D

Awesome photos!

As mentioned earlier, I'm rather alone on the island of Borneo. Alone as in I only know of one other person who owns a sailing boat, which he bought very cheaply from someone who basically abandoned it here and flew home, as it needs so many repairs. He's been sailing on that as often as I've sailed the Big Mac, ie never.

Around 5 years ago a marina was finally built, which only has the above-mentioned wreck tied to it. I really want to park my Mac there, but I need a "boat license" (Ha! I have one! Dunno if it counts, but I have a motor boat license now...) and I also need to get the boat 'registered', which seems some mysterious thing of which nobody quite knows about.

Some chanting, sacrifices at midnight, and mysterious numbers can appear on your boat somehow, but nobody so far quite knows how this happens, unless one pays a fortune every year to some shysters in Langkawi. So my plan is to see if that side of things can be handled by my lovely wife, who is a local-born local and speaks the local lingo much better than I do.

I really will push on the whole licensing thing, as I'm pretty sure I should be able to get a local boat license, seeing as I have permanent residence and a Malaysian driving license. Unfortunately the people at that one and only marina did a lot of head-shaking, tut-tutting and pulled out some rule book showing how Malaysian boating licenses are for Malaysian citizens only, and I have PR, not citizenship (I'm a damn Johnny foreigner, what?)

I did actually find a link for some ex-pat thing the other day that said if you're not Malaysian you don't need a Malaysian boat license (wahoo!), but then it said if you live here and have PR then you do. Wut?

In the wise and immortal words of popular rap artist Eminem, "So which is it, bitch?"

I can't imagine how you try to deal with all those conflicting regulations.

Perhaps putting everything in your wife's name????

Are you still a British citizen? Could you flag the boat in the UK?

Good luck. It sounds like you will need a lot of it.

Hi Russ, yeah, I think for registering the boat using my wife's name makes sense, presuming I can (or she can, without having to get her own "boat license").

Yes, I'm still a British citizen. There are countries, not sure about the UK, where one can register a boat and it stays registered, whereas this local Langkawi thing seems a big rip-off (about $350 USD every year, which is just squirrel's nuts!)

I'm just spitballing here. In the USA it is possible to "Document" a vessel and I believe some have documented their Mac26 with the US government. This provides some protections like the US government will come to your aid if you are hijacked in foreign waters or some such thing. I don't remember exactly.

However, now that I think of it, I believe we still must REGISTER it in a local state. Our state offers "PERMANENT" registrations and my boat is registered permanently. It requires no annual fees. No inspections, no sales tax. Therefore some people have setup shell corporations here to register their $250,000 RVs and vessels to avoid sales tax and local regs.

$350/year is squirrel's nuts. Another way to fleece boaters out of some cash.

You describe a situation that nobody seems to know the answers to. But I applaud you for getting more certifications for yourself. Can't hurt.

In the meantime, attach that mast and see if you can get the rags hung.
