On Edit
The only time the board slams or chucks is when stationary either at anchor or at the dock, or when powering with the board down.
Chip, I beg to differ.

Tacks, hard gybes, sailing downwind, sailing through big chop all cause the DB to unwedge and cause the leading/trailing edges to slam inside the trunk, sometimes quite hard. It is a very different beast than the CB. Also, pulling the board up while the current is putting pressure on it will cause some friction withink the trunk.

Just one opinion ... Macgregor should probably pay for Leon's after-market board
I like your way of thinking Frank 8)
I "had " anticipated adding 10 to 15 pounds of lead shot to my board this spring
Richard,
That amount of weight is probably not worth the effort. At least 50, according to BWY is a "noticeable differnece." From my experience, I don't think the board structure can take it. Take out your board and put your finger into the little hole for water to enter & exit. The fiberglass is paper thin. I did have a chance to see the inside of the DB, unfortunately. The very center, in the thickest part of the board has a corss sectin of reinfoced fiberglass. This are seems fairly strong. The rest is quite thin and flimsy.

Leon,

You have quite clearly been receiving a ration of Bravo Sierra from the Factory, with the dealer's acquiescence. Roger should either get busy fixing your problem, or he should disavow usage of the Macgregor 26M on SF Bay. I'm sure the Arena dealership would take issue with that, but then, I suppose they always have the alternative option ... solving the problem themselves!

The reason you're the only one having the problem is that your board endures more continuous severe conditions. However, I think it behooves every M-model owner to pull their DBs, checking them for trailing edge damage. There are 1100 members here, at least a couple hundred M-owners. You may all be serving as beta-testers! I believe after trying 3 dagger boards, and now electing to spend a full BoatBuck{?} on the 4th, Leon could use your support.

Seems as if Macgregor is acting in the finest traditions of Microsoft. :o
(Hey Roger, ever met Bill Gates?) :x

Considering that Arena Yachts sells about 1 boat every week, there are probably quite a few M boats on the SF Bay. All of this is just too odd, but I am getting aggravated with Arena Yachts at passing the buck and constantly replying to my problem that it is the type of sailing I'm doing" or "I'm doing something to cause the problem" or "I'm motoring too fast with the board down" BS, BS, BS.... Yeah, I'm getting quite pi$$ off! I'm not as concerned about the board per say, since I'm getting a much stronger one made, but if there is a structural defect in my trunk or whatever it is causing the problem, this obviously is a concern. To their credit, they did offer to have me take the boat to them so they can take pictures of the DB & trunk & hull to take to Roger. I will take them up on this.

Just an idea, but I think a call to Bill at the MacGregor factory might be in order......at least he may have recommendations....it may be a problem the dealer wasn't aware of(or ignoring) and haven't told the factory......perhaps someone at the factory may have an idea...then again, if the "lid" is opened to this box, the factory "may not" want to know about a problem...know what I mean?

This must be frustrating and infuriating  Best of luck....and I hope for the best

Generally our boat seemed to be decent quality when it was delivered. The dealer was a little sloppy on some of the options he added, vhf with mast antenna and shore power to name a couple. The galley slides fine but one of the first things I did was to move the water container to the bildge. See my mod at: http://www.macgregorsailors.com/cgi-bin ... record=542. I still use the cheap container but at least now it's easy to pull out and fill and if there's a leak, all our galley stuff doesn't get wet. Also it gets the weight lower which is always good.

I just went out side with my flash light. 22 degrees, ice on the boat and driveway. I crawled underneath and was able to get a real good look. No chips on my 05 daggerboard leading or trailing edges. Not Yet anyway. What I did notice was that the daggerboard is just hanging in the trunk by its rope. It slopps around with ease. Both the leading and trailing edges bouncing back and forth against the hull. I could see it easily, getting very damaged with the trailering alone. I was actually very surprized by this. So much so that one of the first things im going to do is secure the daggerboard for trailering, maybe something as simple as a couple wedges of foam from the bottom to hold the board steady. This sounds to simple to be the cause, but check it out!

If you weight the keel, how will you reinforce, as the design is not for a weighted keel? What do you need to do for a dagger board that can perhaps weigh a hundred pounds or more? Will other problems be incurred? Like, if the board sways side to side on jibs or currents, will the trunk take some serious abuse? Just some ponderings.....

Randy,

The trunk is very strong. It should take the added load without a problem. The part which supports the DB when fully down has the fixed ballast around it (300 lbs) Lots of fiberglass, sand & epoxy. Even Bill at MacGregor said that the trunk/hull should be fine with a 200 lb board.

I look forward to seeing how your keel design works. I did notice the "black boat" Black Pearl is it tha Blue Water had made? It had a keel modification done.....interesting....
