Valid points all.
Worth a debate. I will be inspecting the spreaders on a regulat basis after reading all this.
Many thanks all.

I haven't seen a lot of mast breaks in person, and a few more in magazines or online, but all were broken at the spreaders.

Last month a local Cat 30 parked in a small transient berth learned the hard way what happens if your stern sticks out into the waterway. A 60 ft yacht dong a turnaround in the marina basin struck the backstay with the bowsprit... and the mast broke at the spreaders and it took awhile for the big boat to stop which meant a lot was dragged off the deck and over the next boat parked there. Makes youi want to cry to see the damage to everything on decks even if it's not your boat.
