As a final followup to my original posting, it seems my engine has
worked through whatever issues it had.

I changed the oil, oil filter, plugs, fuel filter, and gear oil, and ran
two tanks (12ga) through it with 2 cans of B12 added to each tankfull,
and it's running great.

I suspect a combination of suboptimal carbs and partially clogged
fuel filter, but as I pretty much serviced everything, I'll never know.

Thanks to everyone for all the tips. This is a great forum.

Great news. I was often wondering where this thread was going to end up? Now I ask, what precautions are you going to take so as to avoid (if possible) a replay? Fuel additives? WOT every once and awhile? Voodoo incantations :o

I think fuel stabilizer and a regular (normal) shot of B12 should do it. But if anyone actually *knows* any effective Voodoo incantations, feel free to speak up ;-)

If you know you're going to be away from the boat for a few weeks...............or really don't go through that much gas.....use a stabilizer in the fuel. B-12 is good maintenance for the every other tank fill up. One other thing that can help.......if there will be long periods of time during the middle of the season when you won't use the boat......disconnect the fuel line and let the motor run dry......just remember to pump it back up in the Spring......I have over looked that one before looking for something bigger.

My engine did the same thing. I tried it all. Even a mechcanic. No luck. I finally figured it out. It was a plug wire. One was too short from Mercury. After a month it worked inself just loose enough to not make contact. I forget how I noticed it but I put on a longer wire and have had not problem since.
