Not by choice, in my case, and even though towing my :macx: on its tandem axle trailer is OK, I'd rather go large, gas be damned. It's just an unfortunate reality in my case, so I make the most of what I've got.

I'd focus on towing capacity. I bought a used Jeep Grand Cherokee with a factory upgraded tow package that may not huge, but is rated for 7,500 lbs - more than enough. 8)

My '02 Grand Cherokee Overland tows the Mac quite well at 65 MPH. 4.7L, H.O. and Factory towing package. Gets about 16 MPG doing it.

Just throwing in my numbers:

Mercedes-Benz GL350 Blutech (Diesel): Trailer-assist anti-sway break assist, rock solid towing at freeway speed, massive breaking power (never feels "pushed" by the trailer). 7500# tow weight, 21 MPG solid while towing. Love diesels for this.

The Dodge Durango and Chrysler Aspen are the same suspension with a U.S. motor and carriage for about half the price.
