Don't panic on us, have your cake and eat it to by haveing Electronic knowledge and Chart DR .
I grew up on my fathers Bandit 38 Ft. Seascribe fishing boat out of Ft. Myers beach during mid 60's to late 60's.
Going out for 10 to 15 days more than 100 miles offshore in a sinking wood hull.(Bandit riged for grouper and snapper)
Navigation was a compass and handheld am $3 radio as a direction finder.Chart fatermeter for locating bottom fish, state of the art.
Worse the seas, more the planks would open, 4 pumps running and 5 gal. buckets for bail just about kept us afloat.
That was when the old Swing bridge got you to Ft. Myers beach and the road was gravel sea shells.
Major shrimp fleet and air smelled like diesil and fish and harbor poluted.
Lot has changed since than.

In The Last 7 YEARS my brother has put on his boat alone.....( and there are 3 to 4 of them who trade trade off ) but he has OVER 3000 hours on his motors.... Documented!!
He has made 100's of trips beyond 30 miles from shore and who knows except him, how many beyond 50 - 60 -70- 80 miles.... past Boca Grande Pass .. All On GPS PLus all the trips he makes with his buiddies.. ..How many trips has this board made collectively, over the last 7 years on their Mac's.. over 50 milers from any shore line? Give Me a Break.. But lets say you have made a trip on your Mac and sailed for 12 hours straight out..
All Of A sudden.. "they" shut down GPS.. are you really ready? The Honest answer is NO! What WILL you depend on? The last screen shot and Your compass.. I know how to DR and its a LOT Harder when your in the forest on ski's for days.... at a time.. A Lot more variable you have to have down pat..

DaveB .. buddy.. I am NOT angry nor am I panicked..Please notice when I gave my example it wasnt more than 7 years old. Recent Relative.... So I ask you? When was the last time you used DR as your sole means of navigation on board your X say in the last 7 years? Yea Thats what I thought....
I am saying from experience and with knowing how to DR that its a skill none here..... who dont move up and then move out ( Big Water ) will ever need..( Why Waste Their Time) On The Other hand learning how to use a Compass Really Well is a lot easier a lot less time consuming, and a lot less apt to be forgotten for sure more beneficial to guys who may never make it, much beyond... The Bell..
I am saying that you and I and a very few others here have learned a skill that just.... isn't relevant to most members .. Why try to scare people..
Just like divng know yuor basic compass numbers for getting home.. This heading will get you to Boca Pass blablabla

In all fairness to dive, I learned chart navigation, ded. reckoning, and (on my own time) celestial navigation in the Navy when I was young and bored on watch at sea. Charting and DR I can still do by memory. CN will have to be refreshed before I can do that again, but fortunately my astronomy hobby has left me with the ability to recognize most of major magnitude stars by sight.

Never did learn to tie knots in the navy though. Wish I'd practiced that then.
