If you haven't read "Sailing alone around the world" by Joshua Slocum, you should start there.

Also, I am currently reading Bull Canyon by Lin Pardey. It's cheap right now on Amazon $2.99. Not really a sailing story but a book on how they build their last boat and a great look on how a couple gets along in a way that allowed them to do everything they have done. Hard to put it down.

Get yourself a NOOK or other digital book reader, download books from library, internet etc.

You always find swap and trade paperbacks in cafe's and other places. Best place is say hello to fellow sailor in your dink. They invite you aboard for Vitals and Grog and exchanging books.

The time is about upon us. We are just about ready to go. Just gotta get through the next week and a half of work
Very excited but getting nervous, since this will be the first time leaving sight of land and crossing the dreaded gulf stream.
Compleate enclosure is fisnished, bought an new Lehr propane 2.5hp outboard for the dink and now just a few small items to be done such as extra oil for the etec, PVC for the goal posts, get oil changed in the tow beast and find someplace to pack everything to lessen the weight on the trailer. Next year hope to add an axle to the trailer but have to stay concentrated on the present.
Will try and keep updates posted here regularly however would like someone to teach me how to make web page to post and keep track of our adventures.

Dave I will be contacting you in a few days to touch base. Hope the offer of the ramp and truck trailer storage are still good?
As of right now I am hoping to be on the road Friday, 5/2/14 and possibly be there 5/3 or 5/4. By the way is there a place to tie up for the night or while out getting supplies after launch?

Wife and I are considering crossing to bimiini in May. Presently Anchored off big Carlos pass on the gulf side. Will be in marathon in a week. Shoot me PM when you get in the water. We might be able to meet in No Name or thereabouts and discuss the trip. Depending on the weather window we are at best fifty fifty so don't alter or delay your plans in any way. From previous posts I know you are on a schedule whereas my wife and I are retired and have none. Still, it would be great to meet. I'd very much like to see your boat and the preparations you have made.

Yep offer is still good. I'll be around except for Saturday morning, but should be back around noon. You can tie up to the dock to get supplies and all, but you have to spend the night on the hook a few feet offshore. Mosquitos can be a bit of a problem at night.

Q flag
Bahamian courtesy flag. (I might have one of those around to borrow.)
Bahama cruising guide.

Things that are close by are grocery stores, West Marine, gas station that sells Rec-gas, resturants that you can access by boat.

My son may be able to help out a little on the web page thing. He will look into it. Probably the best thing is to post your pictures on flikr.com and link your posts on the forum to there.

I am heading to New Pass, Just south of Big Carlos Pass tomorrow morning.
You are probably south of that .
I took the mast off today for summer launch at ramps for overnighters.
Will take Matanza pass at Ft. Myers beach and head south on Intercoastal waters and clear bridge at New Pass.

We're waiting for the updates.

Met with Ron tonight and handed off the 98% production AP electronics for the trip.

They are planing to leave Friday.

Sounds like a lot of work getting ready.

I don't think one can ever be truly ready for a first trip to Bahamas. But we will be prepared for just about anything that may arise.
I still have to put together my float plan and send to Vic since he has so graciously accepted the role of safety person back at home. However I think it's just because he wants to keep track of his autopilot. I guess if we go down with the autopilot then we will at least be found.
Keep us in your prayers and will try and keep everyone posted.

Jim, we are going to leave out of angelfish creek to cross which is located on the southern end of biscayne bay. Would love to meet up and see if we can make it work to buddy boat over. We will be in the water Sat. or Sunday. Monday at the latest. Will try and make contact once in the water.

Dave, I am good on flags, however would be interested in taking a look at your cruising guide. I appreciate everything and am going to at least call today. It gets hard for me to contact people since I work from 8:30pm till 5:00am.

I understand the crazy work schedule. My work went to zero on Saturday. Fell off the roof and broke my arm. So no work untill mended.

Checking the wind, Saturday, Sunday 7-12 kts, out of the south. Tuesday wind shift to the east. Wind picking up on Thursday.
