It's a radar reflector like this one. It's a requirement in Canada unless you're daylight/good weather, although most people ignore this (as they do black-balling when at anchor or black coning when motor sailing).

I think AIS is probably more useful than this, as any boat with radar would certainly see me on the AIS if my boat had no radar detector.

It's interesting that it's a requirement. I agree, any boat equipped with radar (to see your reflector) would certainly have an AIS receiver which would be much better.

I grew up sailing Long Island Sound to Block Island and fog was always a thing. We had one of these reflectors. I like yours much better. The low profile of that is nice.

The challenge with those reflectors is that if a large freighter with a radar located far enough back from the bow, will create a large area where they are radar blind. Our boats are low enough that even with such a reflector, we are not seen.

I’ve been on several boats that do have radar but not AIS…. Older boats may not have upgraded but still are out there. The reflector is sorta goofproof reflection target on the radar scope…. Works without any power in just about any condition.
