Doesn't having an AutoPilot in itself violate the KISS? Very Happy
Of course.

BUt it doesnt violate KISS*, which is "keep it Simple silly while still spending a boat buck or two at West Marine to satisfy deep emotional needs"

A $15 West Marine check arrived at my house a week ago, along with a lecture of blowing $ at WM from the admiral. She has now figured out what goes into that $15 check :? I'm Doomed!

OOOPS :|

After posting about the wheel wobble yesterday, I decided to head out to the driveway to double check. Sure enough there was quite some wheel wobble or play in the steering wheel. I guess I just never noticed it before since I bought the boat that way. It has always been that way. I plan on doing some work on my sportpilot (need to replace the control stalk) and will see if I can reduce the wobble then. Also the wobble does not seem to be that serious though.

Theo,
It is very interesting that some SportPilot+ owners say they have no wobble and I, you and others have wobble. How can this be explained?

What can be improved, and will be.

The lowrance 5500 is great but the brightness of the screen even though you can adjust that down is too bright. Your night vision is shot from it. This is bad as to me the night vision is very important. Normally I can see pretty good on a moonless night but Saturday night I ran through a small kelp bed no big deal but from now on the unit will be adjusted to almost complete dark Ill let the alarms tell me how bad things are or watch the compass. You would think that a red light feature wouldnt be too hard to put in the unit.

The pilot stalk is not lighted so I have purchased and will install a shielded light right above it. I know the stalk is simple but if you had to turn it off or adjust the sen. at night you could go the wrong way.

The wobble: The reports of wobble are from one extreme to the other.
One says it feels as if its going to fall off and the other says its slight. If I have wobble its not noticeable to me. So I dont know what to say. My unit feels solid and doesnt seem to pose any risk so Im ok with it.

The split washer thing: The unit comes with nylock nuts I see no reason to use a split washer with this set up. The unit comes with flat washers and thet is what I used. Maybe I torqued the unit down more than 25 pounds and got rid of any play, I didnt use a torque wrench I used my calibrated arm...

Some one said 5 inches of play in their steering, wow I would replace the steering with that much play. I have maybe an inch.. Maybe the M comes with a different steering unit like rack and pinion than the X actually I think the M does come with teleflex rack and pinion. Maybe that makes a dif.
