All I want for Christmas is a Tattoo 22. I have been a good boy, you can ask Santa. :)

For the last few years, I've been doing the www.packagefromsanta.com thing. For $8, kids get a phone call, a video, and a package from Santa. They really like it. :P

A crying shame to see the Macgregor/Tattoo end up where it is. :(

Without Roger I fear there is no MacGregor.

Very sad... Must report the location for the last plus year for Laura and her hubby; "Frejus, France". This is why we have no Tattoo 22. Mr. MacGregor we would hope would set his daughter strait about the fan following, owners and the heritage she took. Disappeared or in the process of totally disappearing; saddening me..

I spoke to her via e-mail not long ago. There was good news and bad news.

She said they have a new factory location. - Which I guess is good news.

I asked if they might have my boat ready by this summer. She said no. - Bad news!

I am shopping for a Model X to use until the 22 :tat22: is ready. - Good news.

The boat I looked at last weekend in Tampa was more of a project than I wanted to tackle. - Bad news.

Wish me luck on finding an :macx: in good shape that I can use for awhile and resell without spending to much on repairs. :|

Business is business, it's not really Laura's job to lose money and there is no dishonor in walking away from something your not really committed to. Roger was done and gave them the molds and they made an effort but the boat business is a really hard one. Roger has thrown away molds in the past - so it's no great waste and I think that anyone that was going to try to proceed was going to have a hard time of it. I don't think it would be possible to make money without the volume that Roger had. But, I am no business person so it's just an opinion but I surely don't blame Roger for getting old and I surely don't blame his kids for not being the same as him. That's life, reality. I don't think Laura is obligated to give up her life and all her money to resurrect the boat - she needs to do what's best for her.

The only real business mistake I see here is that Tattoo broke the one rule that Roger would never break: ONLY MAKE ONE BOAT AT A TIME.

Roger said over and over that trying to produce more than one model at a time is what ruined all his competition - and he was right. Trying to do a 26 AND a 22 at the same time always seemed like a big task to me.

At least they made a stab at it.

Yes, there is a chance, at some unknown future date, that you will be able to buy a Tattoo 22 :tat22: She did not say they were not going to be built.

Boat - right now my understanding is they will only be producing the :tat22: . Production of the :tat26: has been suspended. So they are following the one boat at a time rule.

If you really want a :tat22: call or e-mail them and let them know you want one. If they get more preorders they might get started a little faster. :)

I think they could have continued the 26 with a few small changes and a couple concessions to buyers.
They needed a lake build and ocean build. Ocean build might use nicer hardware. Slightly thicker fiberglass. Lake build woukd be lighter for trailering. Let buyers choose inside color for added cost. Offer a suite of inside options of easily handled CNC plywood and Formica.
Storage, shelves, ect. They already use the tools and materials. Sell upgraded sails from the start for people who are already sailors. Up sell. Other companies use this technique to make lots of money.

Indeed. It's easy to make a million in boats, just spend two million.

You can't make a lot of money off stuff you don't make, like sails. Commerce is too flat for that.

This is a brutal business and I don't think they will be back. Sorry for the pessimism.

Update from another thread OCT 8 2016

Tattoo replies to an email contact that they are still in process of relocating. No date on when production will resume.
