Men and Admirals
Greetings. Please note that I still own my boat- though it is much whiter than it was when I got it. The scuffs are pretty significant. So far I have self induced the following damage and or issues:
- Broken Spreaders due to accidentally dropping the mast
- Scuffs on both sides due to inability to park
- Sucked vaccuum in the 12 gallon gas tank twice
- Windex not fully assembled due to not reading the directions
- Don't know where to empty the porta potty - its been a few weeks
- Bent the hull out of my 13s Anchor during my first night out
- Bimini is still on backwards
- Pulled the stern rail seat out of hull a bit with tube tow rope
- Have dropped from 16.8 to 13.8 max speed
- Have dropped from 5400 max rpm to 5200 max rpm
- Ran aground - maybe chipped or slit prop on rock
- furler is wound backwards
- still do not have lines run properly for sailing
I need advice on not only the drop in speed but why i cannot get faster with a 60 HP yamaha High thrust.
Will keep you posted - putting on new spreaders this weekend

Definately check your prop for damage and if you still in the water with no bottom paint you might grab a set of fins and mask and see if its fouled. Not sure if either or both would drop the rpms without significant vibration and visual growth but that would be where I would start.

How are you measuring your speed, w/GPS or a paddle wheel?
What index are you quoting, MPH or KTS?

Based on your previous posts, I think it would be best for all involved if you don't increase your speed to 16 knots. Maybe you should not be pushing 10!
Thanks for the laugh. I needed it. It is always funnier when it is someone else's boat.
For the punchline, please tell us how many times you have had your boat out on the water.

Yamaha 60T with I think a 14" X 11 pitch prop with small slit (sure about the 11 not sure about the 14)
Ballast Tank full
24 gallons of gas
2 light weight adults
3 skinny little kids
measured by lowrance 522c gps
one 50qt ice chest filled in the stbd aft place it belongs
mast, boom, sails, anchor, furler, bimini, on board
Basic Camp gear, stove, sleeping bags, dishes, small pots and pans,
5 gal of sink water
2 batteries
4 fat fenders
no bottom paint - have not yet wiped down any growth
galley in fwd position
almost all weight aft except anchor
trying to figure out trim angle
ran aground with motor off - started and stopped motor on a nearby rock - it probably spun once before it stopped - not a really big deal
- maybe more vibration now than when new - but still even new was only 16.8 mph max - in these same conditions and that sux!
Do you think its slowing because its whiter?

It's clear to me that you're having much more fun out there than most of the rest of us!
I know speed is addicitve but maybe you can look at it from this perspective. When you're at 35,000 feet at 450kts things aren't really that exciting... but 250kts at 10 feet is quite a rush... It seems to me you can just get really close to hitting things at 14kts and have one hull of a time!
By the way... how does it sail, isn't that at least half of why we have these things?

I'm putting money on the prop.
I did this very thing with my runabout when I launched it. Brand new reconditioned prop and I wrecked it in seconds on a rock. It didn't look that bad but it gave me less speed then before I had it reconditioned. The vibration was there. Not huge but very noticeable. When I repaired the prop, boat speed came back.
How fast are you expecting this thing to go? You also mentioned ballast tank full so that right there is gonna knock off a few knots I would think.

Update from a evening spin on calm water
Two adults - 1 at 250# the other at 185#
No vibration tonight
WOT = 5600-5800 rpm
15MPH with ballast
17.2 MPH no ballast
185# dude to bow pulpit - speed up to 17.8MPH
Min of 16 Gal gas
50 qt cooler still full
Trimming motor - with motor all the way down - always fastest - trimming up does not bring down bow change rpm or increase speed
Now should not the 60T push this thing faster? i cannot get to 20mph no matter what? does not make sense
oh yeah - all the sail rigging is up

Not that this will be any comfort to you, but take that 60 size engine up to somewhere with altitude like up here in Utah and you'd be very happy with those numbers, I think the fastest I've ever been able to go was about 16.5 or so, typically I'm closer to 14.5.
I think about the only way you'll get 20 out of your current setup is to go solo and take everything that is removable out, which pretty much defeats the purpose of the boat. Mac's just aren't speed boats.
You could play around with different prop pitches, but based on the RPM you are getting, you probably are doing the best you can there. If you don't have transome wedges in yet you can get a very slight increase by adding them.
Three questions

I have three quick questions:
1) Are you trying to kill the 185# dude by sending him up to the bow uder power?
2) Why is the cooler still full?
3) I know you still have the three skinny little kids - - - but do you still have wifey?

I am the 185# dude - and the bow is the palce to be under power. kids love it there.
Cooler is filled with gator ade and coke...nasty stuff - and lots of water that used to be frozen
Wife is still about - she is currently mad cause she fell over the bow rail on to the ground while we were "beached". She claims it is because i ran us aground too fast - truth is - she just fell - we were completely stopped when it happened. any way she is black and blue behind both knees and on the aft. i know ray thinks i make this up - but really - could i?
Anyway - kids now love boat - so wife is bad guy if she doesn't want to go enjoy boat...i win

Three more questions:
1) I just reread your original post to thread - - - are you insinuating that Admirals are not men - - - or do you mean men and their Admirals
2) There was no BEER or Margarita mix in your cooler??
3) Even though you are the HERO to them now - - - you don't like your kids and are trying to kill them???
Seriously, I don't know how old they are - - - I just know they are skinny and little - - - - but be careful with kids on the bow under power. I assume others agree with that (I hope)
Rick
