trailer jack
trailer jack
My Mac trailer jack seems to have broken. It won't go up or down. First I don't understand why Mac welded these, It makes it hard to add a replacement. Does anyone know if the guts can be replaced. Thanks, Ron psych54

Might want to send a PM to Philip http://www.macgregorsailors.com/forum/m ... file&u=660 and ask him for infoPhillip wrote:chinook
I have had a couple thru with the factory jack stripped.
I remove the top plate. Inside are 2 interlocking cogs: one in the vertical, one in the horrizontal.
The winding handle shaft goes thru the vertical and there is a cotter pin holding the cog in place.
To date, I have found by removing the bits of broken cotter pin from the shaft attached to the handle, and digging around in the grease for bits, I have been able to repair the jack to working condition by putting in a new cotter pin.
Got to get the bits of cotter pin out of the grease.....cogs don't like it too much when they go thru them.
Not saying this is the solution to yours, but just could be.
Cheers

Yeah, Ron, the 'search' facility for the forum is pretty useful - this has been discussed before, and here's some key hits:

Re: trailer jack
When mine goes I will not bother repairing it. I'm seeing some indication that may be soon.
West Marine has 1000lb and 1500lb dual wheel ones on sale for under $100 which are far superior to the marginal one the factory installed. They bolt on and can swivel out of the way. I will just go at mine with an abrasive wheel in a grinder and cut it down to next to nothing then bolt on a new one.

Re: trailer jack
Old thread alert
I took the boat for its first trailer spring to 'polish the disc brakes' and check bearings, etc.
My trailer jack will only push down - the tube wont retract back into the housing. Its a Shelby black tube - no model number apparent, and is welded onto the frame. I confess I havent greased it since I got the boat (but the grease inside seems fine)
West Marine has a fulton for 50 USD, I can get a replacement from www.shelbyindustries.com for 43 USD
I will try knock it apart and see if I can fix the old one first of course

Did you see this post? For $50.00 more, it might make sense if you vary the load in your boat from trip to trip.My trailer jack will only push down - the tube wont retract back into the housing. Re: trailer jack
Thanks Jim.
I saw that thread but hadnt considered that. Seasense does make SS jacks though. I have multiple boats, so a standalone scale would make more sense for me.
Do people really have trouble loading their trailer tongues correctly? I get a nice balanced trailer ride at 60 mph (no weaving, no excess sag on rear of tow beast, and immunity from crosswinds and passing trucks pretty easily.

Re: trailer jack
Having just done two trailer jacks in the last month......
Most of those jacks consist of a crank handle pinned to a bevel gear engaging a bevel gear on the end of a screw rod.
both those bevel gears are pinned on with 1/8 or 3/6 roll pins.
The the hardened steel pins shear and the gears are no longer held to their respective shafts.
total cost of repair of both jacks was under 2 dollars, suprisingly enough there was still a lot of grease below the gears.... gravity dripping down I suppose over 14 to 22 years I guess. Still, there was no rust on the gears themselves which were in perfect shape. the only difficult part of the repair was alinging the gears to punch old half of the drive ping and hold the new pin still.

Re: trailer jack
Darren
I had a quick look at mine yesterday and confess it wasn't obvious to mehow to take it apart
do I push out the shear pin on the vertical gear, then remove the crank handle?
Im bothered that the tube will go down but not up , of course. That's a more complex failure than just a shear pin..

Thanks, I always wondered how those things worked inside. Tried to visualize different options, but couldn't ever come up with a good one.Kelly Hanson East wrote:
Our jack was working, but I hate that style of jack and cut ours off the tongue yesterday and welded on mounts and mounted a new one like this one......
....that swings up out of the way. I have this type on my car hauler trailer and on my teardrop. As far as I'm concerned they are the only way to go. They swing up out of the way, so there is no more catching it on dips and there is less cranking to do.
I hope to be done with my trailer mods soon and get to the point I can paint it,

Re: trailer jack
Try adding anothr jockey wheel....

It gives the advantage of overcoming low and high road spot problems....I added this and the original was still working fine...
