Throtttle difficulty on 50Hp Nissan

I have a 50 Hp Nissan on my 98 X. I am the second owner and it sat in storage for quite awhile until I purchased it. My problem is a very stcky and difficult to operate throttle. Reverse is so hard that I have to put my foot on it to get anything over 1500 RPM. Is there a way to lubricate the cable or will I have to replace it. Is replacement difficult? :P

REmove the engine cover, disconnect the cables and make sure that everything's working well under the hood.
If the problem IS with the cables, there are a various possible reasons:
  • Are they kinked or short-radiused in the pedestal, or somewhere under the cockpit?
  • Are they free and clear where they pass thru the bulkhead?
  • Is the handle any easier to use with the cables free of the engine?
Following a process of elimination you might find the root problem, might not. On my brand new boat delivered by the Mac dealer, I felt that the throttle cable was way too stiff. After a month of fighting it, I complained to the Dealer. He decided that the cables provided by Suzuki were inadequate, and installed a set of Volvo Marine cables instead. They are much more flexible, and smoother to operate ... problem totally solved.
That was ten years ago, still working just fine. :)

Frank,

You hit on a point that I have been wondering about ever since I had to replace my steering system since my steering cable locked up after only being around 2.5 to 3 years old.

How long will throttle cables last? I presume that some of you guys with the 90's :macx: still have engines of similar age. Any issues? Do you have to do any routine or preventive maintenance?

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks Frank. I will try disconnecting the throttle this morning! Since the previous owner did not have any problems I would expect that since it was in storage so long it may have gotten dirty or corroded. I am not certain how difficult changing the cables are but it does not look easy. It is disconcerting not having precise control when trying to manuver and to add insult to injury the Admiral can hardly operate it :macx:
