I made my own boarding ladder

Post by Divecoz »

The ladder enables my wife 5'0" to get safely from our dink back into the boat, and vice versus.
Its all of about 25 feet of rope and a total of 10 feet of 2" PVC and another less than 10 feet of 1/2 PVC.
The Bottom Pipe / rung , has drain holes in it and a couple old lead weights to make it sink and yet not add too much weight.
I have about 12" of 1/2 " pvc between ( vertically) teach rung . I drilled a hole at the end of each step in from the end about 1 inch. It took a little trial and error but I can up with the proper amount of rope and now with a large stainless clip on one end and a loop on the other I simply wrap the clip side twice around the pedestal and clip the loop , then toss the ladder over the side and there you have it a mounting / boarding ladder that's easy and safe to use easy to deploy and fairly easy to store when not in use. Cost ? Peanuts maybe $20 Or you can by a rather flimsy unit at W.M. or the like for 2 to 3 times the price.

Oh, you can't get off that easy... 8)
we are going to have to have a picture of this.

I have a 5'0" Admiral... and getting from the beach up on the bow is not as easy as it once was for her...
well... for me either.

I need to learn how to do just that.... post pictures that is. I made quite a few mods this winter and I would like to share them ( brag hahaha ) Best I can do for now is to say. Its a fancy rope ladder with 5 pieces of 2" PVC 2" long for each for step.
The first, bottom most step , has PVC caps on both ends to hold the dive weights inside and vent holes to allow the water to flow in and out quickly. Then I have 1 piece of 1/2 pvc pipe added to the ropes on each side to keep proper separation between the steps and I just keep going up till its as long / goes as deep as you desire. First attempt I had feet on the bottom 2 rungs because of the hull shape and wanting to keep the "ladder " on one plane but found I dont need for the ladder to be that deep into the water. It did entail some trail and error till I got what I wanted.

I think some of us are tense like me to see pictures of Your mods. Why don´t You just sighn in at "photobucket.com". You than uploade Your pics there. Once they are uploaded You just insert the address of the relevant picture (automaticly generated by "photobucket" ) between the underlined part like this
. That should work :)

Maybe we're just lucky... or better yet... they're lucky.
They don't even have to bend over when they walk around inside. :)

I will work on this ( photo bucket site )tonight or tomorrow . I am now going to start a new Topic thread listing the Mods I made on my boat just for my adventure.
I hope the photo site is not as confusing as they were years ago.............

My wife sounds like an Amazon compared to Divecoz, Inquisitor and opie "Admirals", she stands at 5' 2" .

While I have to stand below the hatch and almost touch it when closed, my wife walks in without a problem.

Divecoz, Love the ladder!!!

Do the "feet" scratch or did you plug them with something?

Have you tried to get out of water with it or only a dink? Do your feet want to go under the boat?

How much lead weight did you add to the bottom rung, too much, too little?

I'll be working on this one tomorrow... :)

Thanks!!

DiveCoz,
Did you ever make that trip to Florida this year? If so did you write it up or start a thread somewhere. I would like to read it if one is around somewhere.
