Last time when the sun was shining bright on the port side of my I could observe in the compartment in front of the galley a light red spot about one inch in diameter . At the outside of the hull there is nothing abnormal to be seen.



Are spots like this common to MG- boats and do I have to worry about it?

Are you sure someone wasn't just trying to assassinate you using a rifle with a laser scope?

Seriously, though, are you sure the light was coming in through the hull, or was there perhaps a reflected light within the cabin?

I have the same issue on the starboard side under the forward sette seat storage. Mine is about 3" long by 1" wide and nothing evident on the outside.
Was thinking of just placing a couple layers of fiberglass sheeting in the area. Not really a big concern but one never knows.

You are right it´s looking very much alike a laser beam. However I´m absolutely sure it´s comming right away from the outside through the hull. I suppose on this spot is the GFC-mat missing. Perhaps thats the reason why they have exported it to Europe .

I have several spots like that in my 91 Mac S. No damage or mark is visible on the outside of the hull, but light shines through to the inside just like your photo. On my boat they are all round, and about 1/2" or less in diameter. I figure its been floating since 91, so it's probably nothing to worry about.

If you look at the hull above the water line against full sunshine, you will find the hull is quite translucent - this is normal and part of the efficient use of materials in places which are not stressed.

We can upgrade your hull to non-translucent for 500 USD (with lots of duct tape - blue of course)

The area in my hull is very translucant but just in that one spot so I am guessing the gelcoat (which is not translucant) is very thin in that spot. If so then its more cosmetic than structural.

I also have noticed light spots while working in the bilge. I tapped on the area and did not notice any difference from the surrounding area. I just assumed it was thin gelcoat. I dont remember the exact details, but on one of the earlier Macgregor Sales Video, they show a worker spraying some type of pigment onto the fiberglass mold which I think was too assist in spraying on the Resin..???

I also recall A past topic here about Consumer complaints and defective boats. Macgregor sailboats was low on the list of selling defective Sailboats.

2BonC, I had the same thing done to some of my quotes by ObiWan If you just copy and paste, the quote comes up as regular type with (quote). If it is done correctly the quote will be in a beige highlighted box. I assume there is a good reason (to avoid confusion ). Not a big deal except more work for ObiWan,and he has enough it seems with his Brit Motorworks and his . I still haven't mastered the quote thing. Sometimes it comes out right, sometimes not. I know now to preview until it looks right but still can't get quote to work always. I just tried to put your question as quote and it's not right so I will leave it out. With time I hope to figure it out.

I saw a couple of those in my father's '60's Chinook '34(known as a "Plastic Classic"). I've noticed those on my '69 v-17. At first I was worried, but from what I hear, it isn't anything to worry about unless there are other factors involved.
