Question about prices people are paying for used boats

Post by cbig »

What are the real world prices people are paying for 26M's from about 2003-2005? I noticed the Nada guide seems about spot on for the older boats 26c,s,d and 25's. Many used boats are listed in the twenties, though the factory sells basic boats brand new for I believe 19.9k now. What is a realistic price to get if I sell? Is Nada valid?

thanks,

I just sold a 1998 x for $19,000 in Canada. I know of a 26m 2008 for sale by a dealer for $34,500. the price the delaer lists for a new 26m is $21,950 - Which when you add roller furling, enclosure, dept sounder, gps, shore power, extra batteries, porta potie, anchor and rode, boarding ladder, stove, stern rail seats, etc etc becomes $35,000 FOR A BOAT SHOW SPECIAL. There are so many variables in the price because of all the options that can be included. The factory price is for a plain jane basic boat and the other factor these days is how strong the local economy is. I priced my boat for the local area by looking at all the listings and options they included and then adding what I had on my boat as extras (LESS 50% OF COST) and listing it a little higher to get some room for negotiating. The same boat as mine was about $5000 less in Washington state, but with gst and pst added when imported makes the difference about $3000, which I assume is mainly due to our economy being fairly good right now. It also depends on of if you really need to sell it quick or you can wait. Hope this helps.

Yea, that means NO engine...no headsail. You don't even get a sail cover.

Like buying a car and the dealer asking..."You want wheels with that car?"

Our economy is in the dumpster here hence the low prices and listings not moving..
NADA seems to prevail on the older boats and was wondering if true for the newer.

I have looked at a few this winter, but the market for older macs is pretty soft this winter. However, because of great new offerings and the normal Wonderful BWY service, I have heard that more than a handful of new boats have been picked up here since the show.

That bodes better for this spring I hope.

I know of a 96X with 50 nissan, spinnaker, 150 mylar furler, full bwy enclosure, magnakettle barbQ, electrasan treatment, 28 Waste, Electric toilet, macerator, GPdouble reef doyle main, Depth, VHF and handheld, Furono Radar, CD, Spinaker, trailer only in freshwater, lines led aft, Hot and cold 30 gallon running water, Head and cockpit showers, Origo alcohol stove, shorepower, spare rudder, cockpit cushions, 3 coats epoxy, 3 coats of ablative bottom paint. 16 lb bruc 25 chain/450 rode, 12 lb danforth 20 chain/200 rode, dingy motor mount. Numerous other spare halyards, sheets, stays, shrouds etc..

And this winter, no one even came to look at it for thr 15K asking price in washington state.

times are tough.

I've been trying to buy a powerboat with some kind of cabin here in Las Vegas (where times are tough - - - budget deficits everywhere and 14% unemployment) and have found prices to be MUCH higher than I expected or will pay in this economy. I'm a cash buyer and can't find anything reasonable - - - FRUSTRATING!!!

I had hoped to be back in the water in a slip by now!

My nephew Charlie has just bought a 2005 M with a 25-hp Yamaha, for $17,000, in the Annapolis area. I had a good look at his "new" boat, and found a few items that almost make me jealous - but also a few items that seem better-handled, to me, on the 26X.

(Charlie, if you come across this post, rest assured that your new 26M is a great boat. But I've put a lot of my own 'sweat equity' into Bossa Nova, and when I get her back out to Casa Rio Marina, I'll want to show you what I've done for her....)

I wouldn't mind spending an organized week in California looking at boats to trailer back - - - and it may come to that soon - - - but I am not looking for a Mac - - - and you are right; the Macs are in California.

I bought my 2005 :macm: at about this time last year for $18000. It was in excellent condition, and has a 50 HP Johnson outboard. That was about the NADA value at the time. Both seller & buyer were happy with the price.

I noticed that Boat US insurance will only insure it up to a maximum of a little less than $18K. I asked them how they calculate it, and they use a value estimator like NADA, but one of the other ones (can't remember).

I used NADA and Boat US survey services. IIRC Boat US uses registered title data for their research.
