Phil,

Check out this thread Florida Keys Adventure by CMikey. I remember reading it a year ago and thought it sounded like a pretty good trip and he launched from Naples.

He hasn't been logged on to the board since Jun 09 but his email contact may still work.

Cheers,
Jim

I suggest you go farther North or South to put in. Depends on what you want to do.
For the Everglades (lots of birds, Islands and fish) try from Marco Island to Everglades City.
For Fort Myers North to Tampa bay. (People, food, beachs and a few Islands) A lot of places to put in.

It depends on what you want to do and see. If you know people in Naples, then stay in Naples.

I do not know how long of trip you have, if you go away from Naples, You may have to use a different ramp due to weather.

Let me know if you need some suggestions.

I to agree with that. We are planning a long trip to Florida in the Fall and right now are looking at spending time first up the west coast in the Punta Gorda/Charlotte Bay area and then maybe trailering the boat down and putting in at Flamingo as the way I understand it you have no cost in leaving the tow vehicle and trailer there. From there we hope to explore back north in the Everglades/10,000 Island area south of Naples and then down into the Keys.

The best place so far that we have seen to put in cost wise if you are out for a longer period in the Charlotte Bay area is this marina....

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing,

I live and launch from Cape Coral Yacht Basin (4 miles from Sanibel Bridge), thats 40 miles North of Naples. You will find most Marinas charge $2 a ft. for overnight and as much as $3 for Tween Waters Inn Marina in Captiva-Sanibel.
Ramps are at the average of $10 a day.
How many days are you planning on staying? makes a diffrence were to launch.
Horten Park is a New Boat Launch in Cape Coral protected from all Weather and very easy Launch . Located 12 miles East of the Sanibel Causeway bridge.($10 a day).
Naples is very expensive both for Marinas and food.
We go to Cayo Costa and Islands inbetween and South to Naples stoping off New Pass (Lovers Key) or Big Sand Carlos Bay.
There are so many places to go from Boca Grande to Marco Island , Would take you at least a Month to Sail and Enjoy the surroundings in the area.
Helps if you have a Dink.

Just planning on a couple of days as we head south to the keys. Wife has always wanted to go there. Intend to sleep on the boat of course. I like being on the hook more than being in a marina. Have a inflatable dink. Where would be the best place to launch and any info on trailer storage for a few days? We have never been south of Sanibel on the west coast of FL.

Been to Sanibel for a weeks vacation and really enjoyed it. Had my center console and did lots of fishing.

We are planning a couple months or so in that area (Jan, Feb ?, 2011). Admiral and I want to trailer down to ? in SW Florida, see some sites and then spent most or our time in the Keys. Long range plan (more of a "well lets wait and see") is to head up the ICW to Wilmington, NC to see family. And then eventually sail back down and around to SW Florida again. Planning hard, making lists and reading this board every day to gather all the info I can :)

I have been to Famingo and do not recomend it for storing the trailer and tow as they allow night fishing at the dock and is basicly an RV park with verry little security. It can have a lot of people around it.

Recomended spots, call ahead
Everglades City, Rod and Gun Club. A must stop regardless.
Port of Everlgades Resort. The resturant is not open every day.
Marco Island City. Check local sailing clubs and marinas. Very nice area.

I suggest that you go to "Blue Water Books" and request cruising guides for S. Fl and the Keys. All are good and some are better for shallow water anchorages. Call or email your request.
