Men and admirals
greetings from Savannah ga. Arrived on the riverwalk last night after towing to tybee island and fighting the river and tide to Savannah. Gusty winds threw water all over the deck and only cockpit occupent - me the loyal and hardworking firstmate. Admiral and younglings safe below reading books, kindles, and posting on facebook.
Second time here and nights are not so restful with big ships passing all night and their wake pshing us into the dock.
I do not know how smaller powered boats deal with the currents in this area. It is frustrating to be WOT and ony 10 mph ground speed.
Today we leave for shelter cove Hilton head. I figure 25-30 miles via "the ditch". Pizza at guiseppis tonight. Then harbour town tomorrow and some Gregg Russell.

Sitting in shelter cove marina-much quiter here. Took about 4 hours from Savannah. Probably averaged less than 10 mph. Tried to stay at 4800 rpms. As yesterday very windy and usually in my face. Stopped off in harbour town for gas -what a great marina will stay there to orrow en route to thundebolt.

I was stationed in Savannah in the early 80's and remember Tybee Island and Riverstreet well. Unfortunately, I wasn't into sailing then, just partying on Tybee Island and Riverstreet. I heard I had a great time!

Post some pics of the area if you get a chance. Stuck in the desert out here it's nice to see big water occasionally.

Stuff about the trip - we spent 4 nights on the ICW
1. Savannah River Street - Dinner and touristy things in town. Docked at Hyatt vs. City Docks for shower and bathroom access. Very Noisy and Big Boats go buy often
2. Shelter Cove Marina HHI - Rode Bikes to Beach and Caligny Circle - had dinner at Guiseppi's (go Stillers, Go Pens)
3. Harbor Town Marina HHI - Taxi'd to South Beach Marina for obligatory Salty Dog Visit, watched Greg Russell show - AGAIN.
4. Thunderbolt Marina Savannah - Taxi'd to ghost tour of savannah, had dinner at Tubby's near marina. Very Very quiet night - restful.
Finding Public Boat Ramps in GA is not easy. I drove all the way to Lazretto Creek - put in too shallow of water - and took unnecessary risks going out to Tybee Range to get into the river channel - THERE IS A RAMP IN THUNDERBOLT! I cannot believe the time wasted by car and boat going all the way out to Lazretto - dumb!
The iphone navionics app does not accurately reflect the draw bridge in the photo - I believe it was represented as a 68 foot bridge - when indeed it is 21 feet. The cruise guide and paper chart were both correct. Bridges are easy to determine- power lines though - I will never again trust the electronic charts - have to look on paper.
As advertised currents are strong in this area -

Ive found local knowledge is best way to avoid these problems...bummer about the bridge height being wrong though..does Navionics have a portal to send corrections?
