Would anyone know of a source to get a boot for this connector....apparently Raymarine uses extremely low quality rubber, it is basically "melting" if you touch it, the black rubber rubs off like charcoal .....

First is to clean the connections inside. Let dry and the put electrical tape, then liquid electrical tape a couple of times. Reapply electrical tape and then some more liquid electrical tape. This should keep it dry inside and easy to remove.

Also, Get a pedistal cover. Less than $ 200 and will save sun damage.

Wow! Less than $200 ! I bought a Stern's motor cover for a 50-100HP outboard for $18.00 and it fits over the 26M pod pedestal with room to spare. It is close to pacific blue in color so matches other canvas and it is water proof and UV proof. It protects my wheel pilot, throttle and fish finder/depth sounder display. Not sure it is appropriate for the tommy toothbrush pedestal but it sure works for the older models.

I bought it online through 'Bass Pro shop" an outdoor hunting/fishing gear retailer in eastern USA. There is another seller in Oregon somewhere, I also had that website somewhere but I will have to hunt it down later because I am not at home right now.

Black elctric tape works ands looks great. You only have to put it on the outside. It takes 5 minutes and costs 50 cents and has lasted 1 season and still looks like new.

Found these on Bassproshops.com.

Boat Motor Covers. Wonder if the large blues ones would cover the pedastal? Can't go wrong for $22.99.

They also have this Hurricane Center Console Cover. Looks like it would be about the right size. A little bit more at $44.99.

I will have to give this a think. Might be time to replace the old Lawn & Leaf Bags I currently use. Anybody have the dimensions of the pedastal to include the width of the steering wheel?

Cheers,
Jim

The blue one for $19.99, 50-115hp is the one you want Jim. It looks very much like the one I have. It easily fits over my 15" oem steering wheel and I suspect it would easily fit over an 18" wheel, it is quite large.

Terry,

Do you have anything mounted on top of your pedastal? I have my GPS. Would the one you mentioned go over the GPS (I guess about 8" high) and still reach the bottom of the pedastal?

I will probably go ahead and order one and have it sent to my brother's house. He already has my Merc Maintenance Manual and my shore power cords...they wouldn't deliver to APO addresses. In fact I might order two...one for my motor.

Cheers,
Jim

I have a Sea Eagle Depth Sounder/Fishfinder display on the pedestal and could easily have a big Raymarine C series Chartplotter/sounder/Radar combo screen on top and the cover would still fit over and wrap around the SS pole the pod sits on.

Another option is a BBQ grill cover:
Before autopilot install: http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=918
I do keep it covered from the sun so I do not feel that is the reason...... I use a cover and a bimini ......it is just lousy quality rubber...
I think I will cut it off and just use Silicone tape: http://www.rescuetape.com/
as not to make it "sticky" from eletrical tape
