Perhaps you have dirty "down" contacts in the switch, and the "up"side is fine?
Does wiggle and jiggle on the switch seem to make it work on ocassion?

With luck you could disassemble enough to try squirting a contact cleaner in the mechanism, or replace it altogether.

My engine tilt is doing the same thing on up, just enough times to be a pain, but not enough to replace.
My switch is well sealed and somewhat hard to get full access to, but replacement time is near.

Update your profile to include the motor you have.
We are in the blind if we don't know the Outboard you are haveing problems with.
Off the bat, ck your wire connections, than ck the hydralic fluid to see water penitration, than ck the outer caseing of the power lift for corrosion, than ck for hydralic hoses for leaks.

i think ill check the hydraulic oil level first, theres a nut and an allen key that i am assuming are to do with fluid levels,if that does not work then ill have a go at the switch.

Also check the ground wires on the upper unit at the contact switches
& the elect drive motor brushes are not seized at the amiture

Its fixed :D .Im not quite sure what i did to fix it but its fixed.I took the switch and had a look at it,its a sealed unit so i tried shorting out the wires to by pass the switch and the problem was still there,I took the motor out and had a look at the brushes, they were okay.i added a little more hydraulic oil, just in case and i flicked the switch lots and it started to get better,so i screwed it all back together and bingo :) i works every time.

Off course i did not let my wife know,i just said "Hull im good"

Sorry to hear that you don't know what was wrong, Matt. That leaves your wife with that dreadfull hammer, "I thought you said that you fixed it?" :D
