Rust on a new boat ???

Hello!

Just recently bought a new 2011 :macm: and I am happy to be a Mac owner, and join the friendly community here!

However, there is a bit of a disappointment. My boat has spent only around two weeks in the water (97% of time in brackish river, 3% of time at sea). And when I have taken her out of water, I have noticed that many steel parts have become kind of rusty... Well, Mediterranean id famous for being high-saline... Chinese-made bike got rusty after a year. But American-made boat and after two weeks?
(If you advice a nice photo-hosting, I will be happy to post pictures.)

Maybe I am doing something wrong, and I need to immediately apply some special cover against rusting, silly me?

DrV,

Welcome aboard.

For photo hosting I recommend photobucket.com. It is a free site. Create an account then you can upload photos and videos to your account. Then you can post links from your account into your posts on this forum.

Many of us use photobucket. But there are other photo hosting sites you can use as well.

Sorry, I am not much help with the rust issue or the bottom paint question.

Cheers,
Jim

I'm only seeing rust on my mast bracket after six months in and out of the pacific ocean.

You're doin' it wrong. It doesn't say so in the instructions, but it's blue side down.

Even the best stainless will rust if salt is left on it. You must maintain it by rinsing the boat after each use, frequent washing and polish that brightwork sailor! :)

And actually, the chrome plating appears to be quite thin as well. I would expect those components to not be rust-resistant for too long in salt conditions. It's sort of a "token" plating - just enough so you can take a look at it and say "yup, it's plated".

Thank you for replies... Will try to buy some Stainless Steel Polish, if available. If not - will some kind of wax or car anti-rust solution do the job? Any experience?

P.S. Didn't get the joke about blue side down... I don't have anything blue on boat, should I? :)

He's talking about the blue hull, which is supposed to be down in the water, rather than upside down thus putting the mast bracket in the water. I'm guessing your hull is white (as is mine).
