Android phones are pretty comparable to the iPhone, but the iPad blows android tablets out of the water--it's so much more useful and has a ton more apps. You can use all iPhone apps on the iPad without re-buying, so if you think you are going to eventually get both, go with the iPhone.
Also unrelated, but I bought an awesome astronomy app for my decade old goto telescope that along with a $70 cable let's me point my phone (or tablet) at the sky, move it around to find a planet or nebula on its screen, and then press a button to slew my scope around to aim directly at the celestial object. Considering that I use the same device as an anchor alarm, chartplotter, TV remote, and navi for my car, it's no wonder that they're killing it in the market.
