whats the difference between the options, and are the products the same, but different formats?

I'd like to hear from someone that has actually modded their VHF... how hard is that really? if you're not a EE.

I could modify my hand held ICOM VHF to support AIS, or I need to buy a Cobra or other inexpensive base station.

modding the circuit board is more of the question... or is this some kind of fitting between the antenna and the station..

could you provide a few more details on what is involved please?

I would like to have AIS, but its a mild interest, since I'm not normally in shipping lanes.

On the other hand, I often take my hand held offshore on other's boats, that don't have AIS, and there it might be very helpful. (bimini/cat cay)

The mod is to the circuit board. Most modern marine vhfs can be modded. The book refers to modding a low cost vhf Hence the title AIS for under £30.00

If you use the ultilty Ais Decoder you can view your live AIS data on Google Earth. Google earth can be used offline if you previsit any area on your trip as the data is saved by Google Earth to its cache. AIs decoder is free to downlaod
