As the winter begins to grip the Midwest and it turns colder, I am thinking a southern road trip with the sailboat might be in order.

Maybe a spring break location before the kids show up and spoil everything.

Is There A Sturgis Bike Week type event For Trailer Sailors or sailboats?

Sure would be nice, but putting enough time together in one lump is a problem. Same reason I sold the big boat - just can't pile enough time together to go any distance.

I would say I am making a tentative plan to go. Might make more CENTS to rent a boat once there, it is so far.

There's also some kinda regatta or meet, called B.E.E.R.

I think its in the panhandle of florida or texas...

Think I saw it posted on the trailersailor board.

and there were some guys called themself's the Conch Cruisers... they typically do a summer trip.

and that group that does the north channel islands in late summer

come to Florida
and bring lots of money to spend! we need it!

January can be bitter cold, but it doesn't usually last. Dec, Feb, March and most of April...

Bitter cold in Florida? Try January and February in Nebraska. Sometimes the highs for a month at a time, never get above 0, dipping down to 17 below not counting 40 mile an hour winds.

It was worse for my mother when she had to walk to school, it was up hill both ways.

To find out what others who share sailing as their passion with others who understand.Early on (when I bought my first sailboat), a Mac25, I embarked on signing up for a Bimini Trip with the Conch Cruisers. I was basically discouraged by the member Commander. I really had not the experience to do that trip. And I am thankful today that I was coached in that direction.

Well now that I have gained some experience, I often wonder where my next trip may take me. I think that I am ready for Bimini, Tortugas perhaps. But I certainly feel I have no real experience to offer anyone on this board to areas I have been not. I have not sailed Sturgis nor the Spanish Main, but someday maybe perhaps

That group is called the Trailer/Sailors. http://www.trailersailors.org/ They typically sail for two weeks, with a preceeding week for new cruisers. You can come and go as you want - sail all or part, split off and rejoin. The North Channel is an outstanding cruising area; beautiful, undeveloped, and relatively sheltered by the string of islands south of it. The group is made up of friendly, helpful people. It is a family-friendly gathering, and they do a lot of sailing - not many lay-over days. If you can make the drive, it is well worth it.

I would buy you a beer if we lived closer, and if I drank.

I long for big water, and given my location, the Great Lakes does seem like a logical solution, but not for winter months. Waiting till next summer would get more time under my belt for experience.

A bit out of place, but I actually welcome the winter break from sailing. I will take out one of the dinghies if the weather warms up, but it's a perfect time to get caught up on other stuff. Maybe since most up here adhere to the June July aug sailing season, and I sail more like April through November, I can tolerate the layover...

A winter trip down south would be cool once the kids are gone.

Not sure I agree with looking forward to the break, though I do appreciate the chance to work on the boat (mods, etc) when its on the hard, since I often resent having to do it during the sailing season. Winter is really the only time I can work without feeling that I'm wasting possible sailing time. All things in their time, I guess.

that's the thing being in Florida, there is not a really good time to work on your boat.

in the summer, its just too darn hot and humid, and in the winter, well that's when you have wind, and its nice enough to sleep out. (in the middle of the summer, there is just no wind till after noon then only a few knts.)

-Ask Sumner about winter in fla... its pretty cold... and I lived in boston, and colorado for a while... so I know cold. (I actually killed a diesel rabbit in Burlington VT, in -30 conditions. got it started next day when it warmed up to -5 haha!)

The reason is the humidity is so high it cuts thru everything. 40 degrees in fla, is like 10 everywhere else.

but it also kills the bugs!

Really come to Fla... very nice Feb-March.
