Crewed on Newell's Mac26D "Wind Dancer" to win the Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention's "MacGregor National"


I am hoping Newell comes again this year to repeat. Sean Mulligan, the organizer, is expecting some 150 boats this fifth year of this FREE convention at Lake Havasu City AZ, February 13-20, 2012 (http://www.sailhavasu.com). Great week of several fun races on Lake Havasu and boat seminars. Plus meet up with other trailer sailors from around the country. Plan to be there with "FOREVER" . Will have to unload some of my boat "creature comforts" from the boat to stay in the hunt in the races

Ahoy Steve and Happy New Year. Did you ever install the "Poor Man's Auto Pilot" (wheel lock)? I have yet to install mine, and I best do it before I lose it in the "bowels" of "FOREVER" . Hope to have Newell come again to defend his last year win, but he is having some issues which may keep him from making it. Plan to anchor out / beach as last year. Hope to see you and "Knot on Duty" with her beautiful Firefighter's Maltese Cross on her quarters in 2013 (My late Dad was a Chicago Firefighter/Engineer).

Yes I did Install the wheel lock , it seems to work OK . There might be a glimmer of hope from the Admiral about me going back to HPCC .....in the works stand by. Steve C KNOT ON DUTY

My Dad ,was a Eugene City ,FF/Engineer also .He Died in 2001 ,he was 77. Good Guy. Steve

One way to save $$ is not use the Island Inn this year as you did last year and anchor out/beach the boat at the Sailboat Bay by Site Six as Newell and I did last year and plan to again. Not as comfortable, but if it will swing it with the Admiral, who if like at my HQ, is also the comptroller, you can reduce your budget. Had cold breakfast of cereal and coffee, ate sandwiches from Von's for lunch and dinner at the Golden Corral. Only stayed at a motel first and last night to rest from driving or in preparation for drive back to Las Vegas. Motels all had places for vehicles with boat trailers. Just a thought .

All good thoughts,but I have to pick somethings, not all things . I am going to Swan Lake in Montana in August I'll be dragging the boat up there also. So, see you next year at Havasu. I expect over 200 boats there and Dylan Winters. With all the Mac's there, you would think someone would help sponsor the thing. I wonder how many boats it would take to make this the largest trailor sailing event in the USA? I gotta tell you the start of the long distant race last year was a sight to behold. Sean does a great job.

We'll be staying at the Nautical Beach Cove and hope to beach our 26M. Anyone know much about it? Is it protected from high winds and waves?

We stayed there last year and our room was one the beach at the cove. Several boats beached there and were well protected.

Phil , go to the Sailhavasu site and go to the bottom of the page, and there you will see a bunch of videos of previous events and at the bottom you can look at the flikker account with literally thousands of pictures. Sean has been real good about getting videos and pictures of the event. Steve

If you are fugal like myself (another words "cheap" and on fixed retirement income ) you might want to consider the following for next year:

• Rig and Launch at "Site Six" (end of the Lake Havasu Island on Beachcomber Road). Public launch ramp. Website says "No camping or over night vehicle parking". HOWEVER, launched there last year, parked vehicle + trailer, beach boat at "Sailboat Bay" cove, without a problem. Suspect warning is to give early warning that Park Rangers will remove "squatters" and "derelict / abandon boats". Clean rest rooms, but no shower. • Ate cold breakfast of cereal, juice,and coffee; lunch on Von's Grocery Store sandwiches, dinner buffet at Golden Corral in town 1550 S PALO VERDE BLVD - 2566, AZ.

• Sailboat Bay is about 20 minutes from London Bridge Resort and convention center or Thompson Bay by boat.

Well, yes, as a matter of fact, I am retired. And, there are a LOT of Canadians I know that have headed off to Arizona for awhile to get out of our gawdawful winter. Makes me wonder about the ratio of Canadians to Americans living down there.

Havasu on my bucket list.
