I bought my M 22 from a guy who had it sitting in his yard for a number of years. He in turn bought it from a mate who was fond of tinkering but in his own way. I now have a boat that has clothes line for some of the side stays and think it prudent to replace the rigging.

Rightly or wrongly, Westmarine will not sell you the parts to do this yourself so you have to provide them with the dimensions and they will make up the stays and mail them to me. Given the current configuration I am hoping to be able to provide them with the original specs rather than the ones that I can take away from the clothes line.

Does anyone have the lengths for the side stays, lowers, forestay and backstay?

I bought all the parts separately at west marine to replace my backstay.

I would buy everything online at your fav site and find someone locally with a crimper/swager. Any place the makes good quality automotive/industrial power cables should have a good crimper. You might also find a place that makes custom hoses, they usually have all kinds of fun crimping equip.

A friend's dad owns a battery shop and he has a very strong bench mounted cable crimper I plan to use.

Interesting. Although It has been several years since I got any rigging at a WM, the last time I was there (Anacortes, WA), they were very helpful in cutting the length of cable for me and swagging the ends with their hydraulic unit.

I finally bought a swage tool for cruising, but until I bought that, the local guys at west marine always made up whatever I needed.

The good thing is that WM don't charge any more to get it done, but my challenge is knowing the correct lengths for the wire for each of the components. Has anyone measured how long and what gauge wire I need?

I think you need to

1 find out the correct rigging size ( maybe post in the Venture Forum)

2 buy the correct cheap swage tool (20usd)

3 swage your rigging at home

4 do the longest rigging first so that if you make a mistake ......

It seems no one knows the correct length for stays. I asked a while back about fore and back stay length for my Mac 25, and got no response. Even if you go to bwyachts.com and buy new stays/shrouds they ask you to send in the old ones for them to make up new ones. I'd have thought that the info would be out there somewhere, but I guess not.

Has anyone contacted the factory to inquire if they have the original OEM specs? has anyone asked Blue Water Yachts or their local Mac dealer?

The boat industry isn't exactly copy exact, nor ISO 1000....the quest for information is going to be a lot more difficult than just doing it, imho...

For a boat of that vintage, with the possibility of rigging mods having been made, I would proceed by buying shrouds and swaging them myself to fit. You could fashion some baby-stays with some low-stretch to hold the mast up while you size and swage the shrouds....

I was talking to the Manager of the Rigging Department at West Marine today on some business today. After I finished my business with him, I asked if he could help you out. He said he probably could. They make rigging for zillions of boats and keep records of some sort. He can't guarantee it'll fit your boat perfectly, but he's probably your best best.

I think it's best to make up the wires a little on the short side. If they're too short, you can always add a toggle for an extra 1.5 inches or so and it'll be pefectly safe and servicable. But if it's an inch too long, there won't be enough left after you cut off the end fittings.

Before laying out the long green on rigging made by others, I'd find out the design mast rake, and rig the mast with temporary rigging and take some measurements. Temporary rigging doesn't have to be fancy - it just has to hold the mast square to the boat (port-starboard), with the proper amount of rake. Then you can make marks on what you have now, or add some temporary line (low stretch, or thin wire). You should only have to measure one side for shrouds, as presumably they're the same length on both sides. Same with the forestay, if you need a new one, and backstay.

At least you'll have some idea of what length they should be for your particular boat, in case WM (or whomever makes your rigging) comes up with vastly different numbers. It's better to find a discrepency before the work is done and you own it.
