Suzuki DF50 - has anyone replaced the trim relay?

Post by Mark Karagianis »

Dang I was planning to sail tomorrow too. I can hear a faint click when I operate the o/b switch or the switch on the throttle. Nothing happens. Batteries are good and tested. I searched this forum and the Suzuki forum and didn't find anything. I figure that it's the relay. Where is it / what does it look like? Can't buy one now (Saturday night) but maybe I could substitute one from my Japanese parts drawer . . . Can't sail if I can't raise the motor 'cause I'm 27 miles from the water.

I would check all of the wiring/connections first. Most likely a corroded terminal. Good luck.

Actually, I just replaced the up relay for the DF50 on my :macx: a month ago. Turns out it was a corroded ground connection and not the relay so I have a spare, now. I had to clean all the connections and replace the wiring to the trim switch on the port side of the outboard cowl as those wires were making intermittent connections, also as well in addition to the bad ground on the relay... My advise is to take it all apart, clean the connections with a toothbrush (not the Admiral's !) and baking soda and put it all back together. You may want to check the wiring in the trim switch on the Suzuki remote as they can get stuffed from exposure to salt water, too.

It's located on the starboard side of the DF50 behind a plastic panel that slides up and off-- like this:

There are two relays, one for up and one for down. This is where they are and what they look like; which one is which is easy to figure out:

Too many leaves still blowing around here, they pile up in the stern every week. Time to buy a cover !!

Good luck and Happy Easter!

simple test to see if it's the connection to the battery, most likely cause of the problem, put engine in neutral, turn key to start, if it just clicks you have a power problem. Don't start the engine unless you have water hooked up to it.....Always check the simple stuff first before tearing into things.

Thanks guys. Yeah the engine starts just fine (don't worry Mike I hooked up the hose 1st) and the battery connections are good. Thanks for the diagram and for the photos with the arrows. You know, I looked right at those relays and didn't realize what they were 'cause they look so different from other relays that I've worked on. The connections look fine on the outboard so I suspect corrosion in the throttle switch. That's what I'm going to check next. I'm really tempted to jump the relay and see if the trim motor works. But I guess that I still wouldn't know if the problem was corrosion in the switch or if it was the relay . . . .

Is there a fuse anywhere in this system?

If you bypass the switch and energize the relays at the relays, then obviously the relays wouldn't be the issue. Blue wire is UP circuit, green wire is DOWN circuit. If T/T switch at shift control and Tilt switch at motor both don't work, then likely something common to both like ground, fuse, PTT motor, (or even both switches {unlikely}).

You can always use the manual bypass to tilt-up the motor for trailering to the water, the manual tilt-down to motor & sail with motor down.

I have a suzuki df50a and have a problem when trying to trim the motor up last time I got out when I finished my fishing session and was on the dock couldnt lift my suzuki up just heard a clicking sound neither from the remote switch nor from the motor. To trim it down i had no problem, tried several times luckily the motor was not trimmed all the way down could get it back to the garage. My problem is I am still a newbie and don t know exact location of the trim relay. Do I have to dissemble the motor side covers too to get access? If someone can post a diagram pls where the location is it would be greatly appreciated? On this post there were photos before but now they are gone.

Doesn’t look like any of the current participating members have the info you seek. What year is your motor? That info might help.

Sorry that I can’t help. I have an Evinrude.

dont know where it s located i believe in the lower black box that s where i was hearing the clicking sound when i press the trim switch.Think i have to lift out the upper box to get access to the lower black box.

Again, what year is your motor? I don’t have a prayer of helping you unless I can figure out what motor you have and what the relay actually looks like. Suzuki used a PTT relay that looks like an old ford starter solenoid, but flatter, on some of their motors. DF50A doesn’t tell me what year it was made - so I can’t route my way into the parts catalogs.

They started making the DF50 in 2011. In 2011, the PTT relay looked like number 7 in the pic below.

I looked at a few different years after 2011, and they appear to be very similar. That would seem to put it lower left in your first pic.

If you have the model and serial numbers, try going to boats.net and searching for your part. It’s the PTT relay (power tilt/trim). Most of them are in the $120-150 ballpark plus tax and shipping. I’ve ordered parts from them before.

Good luck. But, the relay clicking doesn’t mean the relay is bad. It could be. But you need to test it before replacing it.

There is a data plate (sticker) on the right side of the engine. It should begin with DF50 or DF50A. Post of picture of that data plate please.
