6 gallon fuel tanks

Post by dlandersson »

Apparently, the Moeller/scepter/neptune 6 gallon fuel tanks that fit so nicely (2 to a side) in the :macx: fuel lockers are no longer being produced.

Any suggestions for a replacement? 8)

I received a free replacement gas tank from Moehler - slight design change with a bleed fitting on the gas cap. Now, the bleed fitting makes the tank too high to fit under the seat :(

I like the 12 gallon moellers. But then, I'm not afraid to pull into a gas station on the trailer, clamber into the cockpit, and fill the tanks in-situ either. I never remove them.

DL, I'd check back and search the forum for Moeller. This has been discussed several times before with some good suggestions.

Solved the problem - for now :)

The long-term problem still is: the new production requirements mean that new fuel tanks (produced after Jan 2013) may no longer fit. :?

I just got four of them two weeks ago from amazon. Little over $200 shipped.

I noticed that too... swapped old caps from my always ballooning moeller 6 gal onto onto the newer 12s for some more clearance.

I also picked up a pair of the the rectangular "EPA terrorist" vented fuel jugs the other day since my vent free ones were a PITA. Gave them a test fill and so far they are pretty nice. About 10x thicker than a standard can or moeller tank, easy to store and quick to pour without spilling.

Don't get me started on this one. Ignoring the fit issue, the new tanks don't vent. So you're supposed to get a tank that will swell and contain up to 5lbs PSI, and a hose with a special check valve that's fuel resistant. Otherwise the pressure from the tank can inject fuel into your motor and mess it up. Or when you disconnect the line it could spew gas out onto the deck, in the water.... Honestly, is this better than vapor escaping into the atmosphere? Thanks EPA.

I went to "My Orders" page and now it's showing a more square tank. Here's a link but like I said, they are different now. If I find em again I'm post em.

That's what mine look like, or similar at least, with the handle more integrated looking. But I think mine are original, and they have no vent in the cap, which is just fine with me (I crack the fill a little). Mine also have a low divider between the third with the fill and pickup, and the rest. I assume it's intended to make the pickup side run dry and still leave some on the other side as a reserve (by tipping the tank to refill the other side).

But I agree that the EPA has done a bang-up job here. Same with the spill-proof gas cans. I've made more of a gasoline mess being careful with those things by far than by being sloppy with the old style cans. So I bought 5 gallon steel safety cans with spring loaded lids and big yellow funnels. But they're pricey. :(

I had a 6 gallon tank in my John boat that was full .a day later was empty .pressure built up and blew the little spring loaded valve out and the gas siphoned out of the tank and out the plug hole in the back .

Just curious - those original Moeller tanks are rated as 12.75" wide. I measure the opening on my :macx: as 23.5" wide. So, in order to fit 2 of these in, do I need to trim the fiberglass a little bit? Or, are the tanks actually a little narrower than specced?
