Perfect position for boathook

Post by bartmac »

Saw the mod for this and wanted to suggest another position for 2 boathooks......on our 26X we have ours on the outside of the cockpit combing between the 2 cockpit stanchions...they are telescoping and adjust and self lock with the help of some shock cord.......easy to get to from both boat and shore....I know 2 is over kill but one is a heavy duty Bridgenorth bailer and doubles as a pump

We keep several on board. Best place we have found is held in place against the daggerboard using a few bungie cords. Telescoping boathooks need to be kept free of saltwater or they will corrode and lock up.

We just hang ours (telescopic) under the boom, hooked on the vang support. In reach of the cockpit.

Haven't had corrosion problems....yet.....like the hanging off the boom idea but with our 2 Biminis that wouldn't work

Mine is clamped inside, between companionway and head. Handle is within easy reach. But now I wonder, being belowdecks, is it easy enough? :?

How odd - I must be a strange person - I have a boat hook and NEVER USE IT! I finally ended up putting a camera mount on it so I could use it to take underwater videos or use as a mono pod.

What do you use your boat hook for? Had one on the boat when I sailed with my dad as a kid and also had one on the old boat I had - but never used it. I suppose it's good for fishing your hat out of the water?? :|

We use ours during launching and retrieving the boat.... And the occasional hat rescue. The boat is fairly small... I dare say that it's always close enough regardless of where it is... For us, it's mounted on the aft head bulkhead.

Thing is, you don't need it till you need it.

Fishing something out of the water (possibly a crew member).
Keeping snug to the dock during cast-off in a fresh cross wind.
Retrieving a stray dockline that's cuddling up to your prop.
Grabbing a dock cleat to stop, because your motor conked out just as you're sidling up to dock - right next to the HMS CreamPuff.

I forget to mention that my boat hook doubles as my whisker pole.

My boat hook is use to collar mooring posts at maximum reach with mooring lines rather than OMG too fast too fast . . . crunch . . or bloody heck another go around after being blown off the mooring . . . all up resulting in many expletives generally comparing the :macm: to a ping pong ball on ice in any wind whilst mooring. And that reminds me - must get a spare boathook.
Back on topic - boat hook stored in cabin but when mooring it is on cabin top either port or starboard with mooring line clipped to the tip ready for the lasso at maximum reach hence need for spare as I will drop it over board one day for sure.

interesting "bloody hull" translated to bloody hull on post but not preview . . . hum . . mild swearing not allowed? changed to heck.

Mine too - I have a max length boat hook and I'm getting pretty good at snagging the middle mooring post. 8)

yep, missus grabs a bollard or whatever with it, while I hop out and do the lines.
Fending off
fishing stuff out of the water,
and as our whisker pole,

We use our hook all the time

Second last time we were out, the missus dropped it over the side and I had to jump in to rescue it!

We mainly use the boat hook to retrieve the dock lines when returning to the slip.

......Christmas lights.....must remember that one.
