ST1000 tiller pilot - anyone installed one?

Post by Excatman »

Hey everybody. I know this has probably been discussed at length, but I just can't seem to find any threads apart from Catigale's Simrad TP22 install.

Has anyone fitted a Raymarine ST1000 on an :macx: and if so can you answer the following questions:

1.) Did it work?
2.) Did the throw of the pushrod "run out' before it reached the extremes of the steering (this is my hope)
3.) Do you have pics? :|

I'm on a budget and don't want to pony up the 1600 bucks for an EV100, so the ST1000 seems to be the best budget option (also have some pressure from the Admiral to keep costs down :? )

On a side note there's a really cool wireless remote for Raymarine pilots with Seatalk available from one of the blokes over at the Trailer Sailor Place site. Link to his site is http://www.madmanmarine.com/ ...no connection to him, just thought it was a really great idea and well priced.

Cheers in advance for any info...

Do you have a tiller on your :macx: ? This autopilot needs to be installed where you can always reach it easily to adjust heading.
I worked with people at WM, directly with RayMarine, and researched personally the different solutions from all the leading vendors and the EV100 was the most cost effective one to install that was compatible with my :macm: setup. I appreciate the budget stuff, that is why mine was a few years delayed.
Personally, I do not think the ST1000 will work but good luck.

Another vote for spending the additional $1000 to really do it right. EV-1 is the way to go. I've got a SIMRAD autopilot on my bigger boat, and it's not nearly as good at managing quartering or beam swells as the much less expensive RayMarine. The new 9-axis sensor in that thing is a thing of beauty and it changes the performance of a MacGregor. dramatically. It's also very low draw, about 2 amps, which can be kept up with using just a 40 watt solar panel or occasional motoring if you're doing extended cruising.

Also, with the "MadMan iSteer" WiFi remote, you can steer the boat from inside the cockpit using an iPad or phone, and given the very good window visibility coverage on Macs you've got an option for keeping dry in inclement weather, almost as good as a true pilothouse for an additional $400.

Can get for about $1300. I did fairly well in that I believe mine was an open box (second) sale. In USA, do not know about oversea.

Which drive system would you use for a 26 M :macm: ? would that be the EV-100 WHEEL?

I'm waiting patiently for Vic's autopilot. Mostly because I refuse to put a giant ugly bagel on an already tiny wheel on the Mac and the tiller pilot mods scare me. I've seen good reports, however it is not designed to be attached permanently. However with more time I'm leaning towards the tiller pilot as a viable solution if Vic doesn't bring something to market soon.
