Model 19 valve repair

I bit the bullet and purchased a :mac19: to pass the time until the :tat22: is ready.

I almost bought a :macm: with a 90 hp, but I'm glad the :mac19: with a 40 hp came up for sale.

Biggest issue is the valve that lets the water in and out of the tank in the back is leaking. The seal has dry rot.

How hard is it to repair/ get a new valve seal?

Any help would be appreciated. It has been 2 long years since I sold my 26c - I am glad to be officially back in the club.

Not hard at all... I did mine on my old :mac19: , removed the gate valve, go to any RV or Camping World and match it to the same model used for RV black/grey water tanks. It unscrewed if I remember correctly then cleaned off the old 4200 sealant, mounted the replacement and reseated around the edges. Hour tops.

Glad to see another 19 owner. I love mine but as with most things My eyes are bigger than my wallet. My wish list if purchased would cost 2 to 3 times what I paid for the boat.

Is that an offer? How much would you like me to send you for that valve?

I do have a concern about replacing my old valve. The metal stick connected to the handle goes under the motor mount slightly. Do I have to remove the motor when replacing the valve?

Thank you to everyone who replied.

Glad to hear that you found a boat, even if it's not the the one with the 90 hp :( A man needs a boat. It would be a shame to die with too much money in the bank. You need to enjoy life while you're living, right?

I purchased my gate valve from Blue water Yachts (bwyachts.com).

Whether you purchase the gate valve from bwyachts, an RV supply store, or Highlander, you should be good either way.

Regarding your question about the T-handle going under the motor mount, I doubt that you would have to remove the motor. The T-handle screws onto the top of the rod which is connected to the valve. With the T-handle removed you should be able to slide the rod under the motor mount. It's hard to say for sure without seeing a picture. Post a picture so that we can give you better advice.

I appreciate everyone's help. I will be going to the local rv shop tomorrow to purchase the valve. I will Pm you highlander if the price was crazy high or if they say they can't get one.

I will try to take the original valve apart once I have the new one. I think I will be able to slide the stick through the opening behind the motor mount, if it comes apart.

I will post pictures if I am unable to get the old one off.

I am really excited to sail :mac19: . I have purchased a new led bow light that will be installed tomorrow as well.

Are you sure it is that rare? Did they only make 1000 or are there only 1000 left alive?

They made about a thousand and about 1/3 of them have been kidnapped by foreigners! There are usually only 3 or 4 avalible in the USA at any given time.

The 19 is one of the best boats - they are very rare and good looking boats. They are sought after because their size fits a market out there that is not currently being serviced. (The main reason Tattoo proposed the 22 in the first place). If the 19 were in production today it would probably be the most popular sailboat by numbers because the current "middle class" is a lower income today than the the "middle class" of the 1970's and they have smaller cars, less children, smaller driveways, less vacation time, and don't travel as far. The 19 fits the needs of today's demographic better. If a 22 ever does get produced it will sell like gangbusters to "middle class" families and retired sailors who can't handle their larger boats anymore (or just don't want to).

Of course, the number one object in sail boating that still separates the upper to lower demographic since the 1970's is the same: THE SLIP. That will always keep the trailer sail boat market popular with the middle class.

Your 19 may someday become a good investment.

I hope your are right Boat about the :mac19: I just purchased being a good investment. I will be happy to get my money back out of her to use for a :tat22:

I completed the valve replacement today. I learned a few things that will help the next person that needs to do a valve swap.
1) a vise makes it so much easier to get the handles off of the shaft on the valve. I tried with pliers for quite some time before I remembered my neighbor had a vise.
2) you will need to shave off about a 1/4" on the side of the valve that goes against the transom so it will lay flat.
3) have someone other than your wife help you if at all possible :|

I am now ready to take her out for a spin and the weather looks like crap for the next few days.
