I finally got out on the water yesterday July 3rd

nice morning no win so i motored, the afternoon got windy and too big of waves for first time out on the bay, and i now know i need to run the halyards back to the cockpit. A bit crazy up in the cabin top trying to raise the main.

but i was able to run it on motor and also had an hours worth of slow motoring practice back at the crowed ramp/marina. learned fast! Thank you for the tips on putting the rudders down. i kep them both down no centerboard and it was relatively easy to control. the winds were not bad at the ramp.

my question is while out on the water and getting ready to sail, i let the center board down and the line only went out about 12- 18 inches (guessing) not nearly as far as i expected. The previous owner had a knot tied in the end and i noticed where it hung down to, then when i let it out there was still 12 inches left and no more would go out.

i supposed the extra line was there to have a place to hold to pull it up.

how far is the centerboard extended below the boat.and is this the correct amount of deployment for the line

Mine lets out about 18 inches so sounds about right.

The CB swings on a hinge pin at the top, which is forward when it's tucked up in its trunk. The line goes through the compression post under the mast and connects only a short distance from that hinge. So relatively little line in/out will raise/lower the CB all the way. 12-18" sounds about right.

And if you put a little CB down for docking or any maneuvering for that matter you will find it turns even better, and won't side slip as much in a cross wind.

Approx 18" sounds about right.

When you are raising the main, I sit on the cabin, I don't like standing up there if there are any waves at all.

Seems like the travel is more than 18", but I don't recall exactly. But the top of the CB has a stop, so when you let it down you should be able to feel it hit that stop. Keep in mind any cross or rearward pressure against the CB will keep it from lowering, so you may not feel it lower all the way. I believe the board is 4'9" below the bottom of the boat.

I put electrical tape around different points on my CB line to remind me of fully down CB, half, 3/4 and up since all have good use depending on sailing or simply motoring to the dock. Point being that for the Mac each of those few inches make a difference in speed, steerage or direction.
