ladder interferes with motor...

Post by Don »

While measuring to build a back deck on my 97 :macx: I found that with my Honda 50 tilted, the ladder interfered with turning the wheel completely to starboard. This would be the configuration while sailing. I don't have room to move the ladder. Anyone else have this problem, what is your the solution?

My ladder is mounted on the port quarter, outside the port rudder. This ladder was a dealer option for only a few bucks extra. I think it's a better choice than those that go betw rudder and outboard.

Mine was presumably dealer-installed as well (I doubt the previous owner did it)... and it is between the rudder and engine too.

It does contact the tilted-up motor, but I don't think it's enough to cause a problem while sailing... the boat doesn't respond well with the helm hard over like that anyway!

They are all dealer or owner added. The boat does not come with a ladder from the factory.

I find my large one mounted outboard of the rudder on the port side to be quite useful when we are out swimming and playing with water toys. It's also a excellent handle tied in it's up position when boarding the dinghy off the transom. I doubt I would even uses the small one between the motor and the rudder. If you don't like it's interference with the steering there there just remove it.

You can see my large one in this picture as well as the transom mounted grab handle. We also use the ladder to mount the 300' poly shore tie spool when cruising as we never lower the ladder on those trips. The 55 degrees year round water in Puget Sound is too cold to even consider swimming.

Mine's a '97, also w/ladder between rudder & engine, also a Honda 50.

Was the engine vertical?
There's only interference on mine if:
o Engine's tilted and helm is hard over to port.
o Ladder is -down- and helm is hard over to port.

Using the ladder and operating the engine s.b. mutually exclusive anyway.
If you're disconnecting the engine to sail it should be locked in the center, again, no interference. Mine's tight but clears in operating conditions. (barely)

I put mine where Duanes is, following his lead I confess.

I also use mine to mount my Lifesling when I sail - quick access to it and yet it is out of the way.

It holds up with a Stainless clip (defender 752371) when sailing and a sailtie for trailering/rough weather

Ladder and motor use are indeed mutually exclusive...

mine is mounted btwn port rudder and motor. when ladder is down, the prop will hit the ladder when turned all the way to that side. Two inexpensive solutions: keep the ladder up under power, or don't turn the motor all the way over to that side.

:macx: think i will someday add a large outside-the-rudder ladder like those i have seen on here, for improved swimming boarding, but i do like the one i have between the rudder and the motor for trailer boarding, where the outside ladder would be impossible to use without lowering the rudder every time. those who don't trailer-slip their boats would not need the inner ladder location. :macx:
