mainsail attachment to mast or boom?

My new main sail tack is attached at the old style J hook on the boom fitting like my old sale. It's a loose footed sail but when I put tension on at the clew on the boom it doesn't pull on the tack attachment it looks to be pulling on the lowest sail slug. There is a crease in the sail back to the clew while sailing. It looks like the tack should be attached to the mast instead of an inch behind on the boom fitting. On another boat I had a pin that went into the track and held the tack in the sail slide track. Any thoughts on doing this on a 26X?

Hmmm, mine doesn't do that, I have a Hyde replacement main that is hooked to the gooseneck with a twist shackle. Mine is loose footed, but does have a slide at the foot of the tack as well as the clew.

Do you have a picture?

Worth a try. Maybe just run a line or webbing around the mast and through the clew for a test.
