I am interested in developing a launch checklist and a trip checklist. Does anyone have something they use for launching. I have a 26S, but I would assume any Macgregor checklist would work.

Windbarry Set Up
Post by Murv Barry » Thu Nov 18, 2004 3:57 pm
This is Windbarry's set up and a follow up to my original post in this forum. Although clear to me, it may be difficult to follow. My set up has been taking 25 minutes so hopefully I can get it down to 20.
Good sailing, Murv
AREA 1 - GROUND - 2 minutes
1. Untie mast-raising line @ bow pulpit
2. Remove tail lilght bar & hang it on trailer sideboard
3. Remove rudder bolts
AREA 2 - COCKPIT - 2 minutes
1. Attach Windex to mast
2. Untie backstay and release mast from mast crutch
3. Bring headsail and boom topside
4. Release preventer lines & 3 small liness that secure
forestay & backstay
AREA 3 - FOREDECK - 10 minutes
1. Remove center mast support
2. Remove line that secures all shrouds fw'd
3. Attach mast to tabernacle - raise mast
4. Attach forestay & secure mast raising line
5. Hank on headsail, attach halyard & downhaul to sail
6. Secure gin pole to stanchions
7. Bring halyards, sheets, backstay, topping lift & boom
vang lines to cockpit
AREA 4 - COCKPIT - 6 minutes
1. Place boom on mast crutch and sliding hatch, attach topping
lift & backstay
2. Attach boom to mast, insert sail slugs, attach halyard, boom
vang & preventer
3. Attach mainsheet to traveler
4. Secure halyards & sheets
Mods having a positive effect are:
1. Eliminated need for wrenches - use snap or hitch pins in bolts
2. Increased length of gin pole, can now raise mast standing on
foredeck. No winching. Mast raising block & tackle remains on bow.
3. Shortend each spreader 12"
4. One line secures shrouds fw'd along mast when de-rigged. 3 other
lines secure backstay& forestay in cockpit area. No other lines or
shockcords used
5. Shroud lever tightens/releases forestay
6. Backstay unsnaps from backstay adjuster
7. Use a pin instead of sailstop. Preventer lines secure center mast
support when trailering
8. Can move from Area 1 thru Area 4 without backtracking
9. If two people - one does Area 1, other Area 2. Both in 3 & 4

This is a good list. I can use this check list to create a specific list for Orkia.

When you get around to the haul out checklist, remember to add 'pull up rudder(s) before hauling'.
Jus' sayin'!

See attached,
Launch and recover and not identical and you should tweak per your boat.

Where's the beer on that checklist?
I think it's more important to have a parts checklist before you leave to head to the launch, to make sure you have all the bits and tools. In my experience the rigging part tends to work itself out, although a big one is ATTACH THE DARN WIND VANE before you raise the mast. The other big one is CHECK THE DOUBLE-DARN attachment loops of all the stays to make sure they are not kinked before lifting the mast.
Basically, check things that would make you have to bring the mast back down. After that, all you need is a post-rig walk-thru list. And beer.

Orkia is an acronym. My last name is Oetting. My first name is Robert. KIA spells out my wife and two daughters.

All great points. I tragically forgot the beer on my last outing. I surprised myself with that one.
The wind vane, rudder, and trailer straps are all items that have caused me problems in the past and need to be included.

Howdy, As an inexperienced sailor, I launched my Venture 21 for the first time this weekend, and it was a confused mess to say the least. A checklist was definitely needed. I took inspiration from
http://brownz.com/wp-content/uploads/20 ... cklist.pdf and came up with a checklist for the Venture 21. I'd appreciate any input on it.

Checklist looks good.
I'm not familiar with the 21.
I would add before driving UP the ramp to pull the motor up. (I've made this mistake). I assume it hangs down.

Howdy. Thanks I have made that change and re-uploaded the checklist.

Hey!
This is a great thread on checklists! ( But you already knew that!

)
It has really been a help to us in planning out our own checklist(s).
I’m a great fan of “TO-DO” lists that help keep me on track and avoid ‘chasing squirrels 🐿’ or wasting the day on things of a spurious momentary thought that drags me away from what I really wanted to accomplish of longer term value.
On our first outing we had a picture perfect launch but the engine would crank but refused to start (?!?) …. So after fumbling about for half an hour or more I manually reloaded onto the trailer and hauled out
Turns out I fully forgot about the engine kill lanyard and didn’t realize it until I had already hauled out and gotten home!!!
Felt like (deservedly) a complete rube!
Never forgot that lesson!
A simple checklist would have prevented a lost day on the water.
We are continuing to develop and simplify our checklist(s) by going back over prior post on the forum and this current one.
There is always a good perspective and a different approach that the contributors to this site provide (and are very appreciated).
When we get some time to transcribe my handwritten lists ( yes old school paper and pencil stuff) to a text document we’ll add some of ours to this thread next month ( currently working down our priority’s list of ‘TO-DO’ items ).
Best Regards
Over Easy
