Cutting out for alcohol stove

Post by Stevenhigbee »

I acquired a 1-burner Origo 2000 alcohol stove that I want to install in the galley. What are the best tools for cutting the fiberglass so I can drop it into the countertop? I have an oscillating tool with wood/plastic blade, and a 4 1/2" grinder with abrasive blade for steel. It will be a square cut with no rounded corners.

I have a propane range top. I used a jigsaw with a fine hacksaw type of blade for the fiberglass. , but I also was able to place a piece of plywood on the top because the galley top on an M is recessed. I also dropped in a bar sink. I am not familiar with your boat.

I vote the oscillating tool with a partner to hold the shop vac nozzle near the cut to scavenge the dust. The 4-1/2" grinder will create a bigger plume that will be harder to control.

Cutting fiberglass is a messy and itchy job. Make sure you are wearing protective clothing, masks and eye protection. Shop vac will help.

Little trick I learned here is to put baby powder on your skin to prevent glass fibers from sticking.

Before you cut your boat to install an alcohol stove, suggest you take it into a small bathroom or closet, light it and sit there with it for a while to make sure you're OK with the scent of burning alcohol. It was not a viable option for me.

When I was researching using my alcohol stove I heard a lot of horror stories about obnoxious fumes and soot, etc coming from these stoves. California had passed a law outlawing denatured alcohol so I tried using 99% isopropyl alcohol and, sure enough, it was awful with both the smell and the soot. Later, I went into my local West Marine and the guy told me they would still be selling the denatured stuff for a long time. I guess I'll have to go out of state when they run out but this stuff
burns odorless and soot-free. I love that little stove!

TLDR: Depends on what fuel you're using.

I buy 96% ethanol in Mexico, no denaturing in it. It's from sugar cane. The poor in Mexico do drink it, adding it to soda or something. But Tequila isn't much more expensive.

Are there any countries besides the USA where the government would rather kill its citizens rather than allow them a way to get drunk without paying tax?

I just made some decent cuts in fiberglass with a jigsaw and a metal-cutting blade.
