I just picked up my '87 Mac 26D, cleaning now, going in the water for leak inspections, define bootstripe, and rig tuning next week. Afterward, out of the water and onto the stands for bottom protection. FYI, this boat was always in fresh water and always trailer stored... the gel coat is excellent with the exception of expected gouges & dings. I will be using in salt water, approx 50/50 between trailer and water storage.
Reading manufacturers quantity guidelines, they seem HIGH (example, Interlux says 4gal of each paint for a boat up to 28')
To you Mac owners who have actually done this job, how much barrier coat and antifouling paint should I get?
So far, it appears the best bang-for-the-buck in regard to quality & price is Total Boat products, purchase fom jamestowndistributors.com ... any other strong suggestions? Has anyone here tried the Glidecoat ceramic coatings? (expensive, but sounds very spiffy and durable)

Ok, with regards to the barrier paint, four gal. is about right, assuming you are going to put on 4-5 coats, alternating a light color with a dark color. Each coat will be less than a gallon.
For the antifoul, same applies, but 1-2 coats is fine - and should last 4-5 years on a 50/50 freshwater boat.

Thanks very much DL Andereson... this confirms my own thoughts, nice to know these quantities worked for a person actually doing the work.
The boat WAS always in fresh water... I will be running in saltwater, 50% of time on trailer / 50% in the water... will never be in water more than 6 weeks... still looking for antifouling choice.

In preparation for keeping Andaluz at a marina (fresh water) for the Summer I had a barrier coat applied to guard against blistering. Had an anti fouling ablative coat put on CPP from Tiffanys, I mean WestMarine. Seems to work really well with just a washdown at the end of the season 3 years now. Just needs a touch up in a few spots.

We used Interprotect 2000E as a barrier coat, and I couldn't be happier with it. Four coats took three gallons, but if you alternate between white and grey to get a really good visual on the quality of each coating, four gallons would probably be better. It's really tough stuff and not only provides blister protection but also abrasion protection if you beach on sand often. It's been a couple of years since we did the job and so far the adhesion has been perfect.
We applied VC-17M copper-based anti-fouling over the 2000E, since we sail exclusively in fresh water. It needs a washdown and a touch-up each season, at the cost of a liter of VC-17 and an hour or two. The VC17 holds up pretty well for a year, but does allow a slight layer of slime to form, down to the depth of the sunlight penetration on the hull, but that wipes off very easily. The water at our marina is fairly stagnant and weedy.

Re: Mac 26D - Bottom, Barrier Coat & Antifoul
Thanks Starscream, great information. I have used Interlux products on industrial construction jobs... excellent company and material, expensive! I am reading nothing but good things about the Total Boat products, a lot of Pro Boatyards are using Total Boat. My Mac26 will mostly be stored on a trailer, only be in salt-water for a few weeks at a time, and I will power wash every time I trailer the boat... at 1/3 the price, I'm going to give Total Boat a try for barrier coat... not sure if I really need antifouling for short periods in the water.Starscream wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 6:46 am Here is a link to my post about re-doing our bottom-job:
