Foils for a Mac26M

Post by Highlander »

Now I wonder how much this Mod would improve sailing performance on a 26M , I don't think it would work on a boat with a swing center board tho

Image

I think this could b dome on an :macm: :) mounted on top of the deck

fabrication might b costly & time consuming but would b a good winter project :)

Just putin this out there for opinions & concept minded people like myself , what type of material to use for the foils etcetera

Cool idea. It is my impression that the foils, if so designed, basically replace the dagger board or swing keel.

Looking forward to seeing a foiling Mac cutter video soon. 8)

Foils on a Mac 26M...

Equivalents:
Spoiler on a minivan
Wine cellar in an efficiency apartment
Wi-fi connectivity for a cheese shredder
Amusement park at McMurdo Station

My point?

Foils are useful on a racing boat, something the 26M was not meant to, and will never, be. Draw a Venn Diagram of racing boats and a recreational motor sailers and at no point will those circles connect.

Similar to a few people who have taken Optimists and retrofitted them with foils. Even with lots of engineering knowledge behind them, they are awkward to sail, and not all that fast.

At some point, choices have to be made.
The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.

Concur. For foils of this type to work they need speed. And lots of it. Speed under sail comes from an efficient rig. The macs are built to be comfortable cruising boats with just enough sailing ability to please a casual sailor. The rig is under powered, because the boat can barely stand up to the sail plan as it is. That’s because of the narrow beam (legal trailering) water ballast (lighter trailering) and high freeboard (room)
I very much doubt there’s anything to be done with a Mac x/m to increase speed under sail. I’ve done a few thing to mine but only to add control under very specific conditions. (Shallow water)

Yea, I didn't buy a Mac to go fast (under sail).

Oh jeez, that is hilarious! Imagine what that must be like in a 30 mph crosswind.

when heeled u can pull out the foil on the heeled side & raise ur D/B should improve pointing , less leeway as it basiclly takes over the D/B dutie,s as it would b totally vertical when heeled !
one of the things I liked about my :mac19: was the deep V chines on both outer sides of the hull when heeled 15/20% these chines acted like a small foil as the water dug into that deep V chime preventing a lot leeway like running on a rail if ur mast rake & shrouds were properly tuned also the :mac19: had a semi V hull not flat like the :macx:

As for the rest of u guys where's ur enthusiasm :)

Ray...foils on boats are all the rage these days. Gone are the displacement hulls on America cup "Yachts" and now everything is riding on foils.

That photo was too much to ignore.

I looked it up, only to discover that the vehicle is in Japan.
