Having been out and about on Lake Winnie in NH and Lake Champlain in VT/NY on what some would class as just ‘moderately’ breezy conditions that churned up short frequency +2 ft waves was exciting enough for us!

two foot waves

Yeah, we managed the two footers ….But there are TEN FOOTERS out there on them Great Lakes!!
Even the car ferry stayed home!!!

When we contended with +3 footers down South where the Broad River (good choice for a River name as it it broad!) and Beaufort River join up on the way to the Atlantic it was a dipstick-doodle ride with occasional waves nearly breaking the bow when going past 4 knots. At least the waves (like those ocassionally on the Great Lakes) there didn’t have our bow pointed straight skyward!

I have never personally managed a boat out of sight of land (as yet ) and so I fully respect those members who regularly venture out on to these HUGE inland seas!!! Just the concept is still a bit of a pucker factor (if I’m to entirely honest ) so I’ll approach ever venturing out on the Great Lakes with a severe clear/low wind current/long erm forecast in hand and still keep an eye on the weather app!🫣 ….. and maybe be fortunate enough to take along another experienced Great Lakes Mac skipper when that opportunity arrives too!!!

Your caution will serve you well. You don't have to be out of sight of land to get in a bind. Those "lakes" deserve a lot of respect.

Absolutely correct, but that's why we check weather. The GL's are not like mountain lakes where bad weather comes suddenly over the mountains. Like the mountain lakes, the GL's are shallow.
