I'm thinking of replacing my shroud tensioners with turnbuckles on my 26S with this:

Working load limit 1896 lbs.

Would this be adequate? Any suggestions or observations to share?

The type of 1x19 1/8 inch stainless wire used by Macgregor for the shrouds has a minimum break strength rating of about 1,800 lb. https://loosco.com/products/aircraft-ca ... steel-316/

Thanks! Looks to me like those turnbuckles will work fine.

A word of caution. Turnbuckles are more prone to bending than those shroud adjusters. Docks, mast raising mishaps and snagged lines can all cause this. Once they are bent they need to be replaced.

Good point, thanks! I will take that under advisement.

A lot of the stuff on the boat looks kind of marginal but it’s actually often times the simplest and strongest method. The rigging on my 73 venture 22 was very similar to the boat I bought as a dealer demo nearly 40 years later.

Funny you say that. Some of the hardware on the Hunter 170 (17' day sailer) was as, if not more, robust than that on the 26S. I've always thought of the 26S as a "protected waters" kind of boat, but respect the simplicity and effectiveness of the design and attendant hardware.
