Mast raising hints

I put bigger ring dings on the ends. It is a very nice mast pin and can be purchased at Dwyer Aluminum Mast Company, Inc.

The part number is DH 2150P. The pins are $6.90 each.

:arrow: Loosen the baby stays. They don't have to be that tight.

:arrow: Get keypin shackles on the lifelines' ends so you don't have to fight them with the spreaders.

Or, if you are real cheap, like me, you can just drill a hole in your bolt and stick a hitch pin through it...

Keypin Schackle

Remove the clevis pin from your existing shackles, remove the shackles from the lifelines and replace them with these. You'll probably have to take up the slack with the adjusters at the bow. Makes it easy to lower your lifelines when lowering the mast, rather than trying to get the spreaders under the lifelines.

Moe, the forestay pins i bought from BWY fit into the furler shackle just fine, if you mean the same shackle at the bottom of the drum... it is a 1/4" standard pin and hole on my 2000 X CDI furler. ???

I have a couple of the big pins Mark refers to in his post. The ring ding comes off all right, but it's a bear to get back on. Have to open it with a jack knife and struggle.

Mark mentions bigger ring dings. I'd like to use a hairpin, but wonder if that would be wise with the mast step pin being so critical. Also used to pin mast raising pole.

For all lifelines to be easily dropped, I have four pelican hooks with T bars from Sailnet.

BWY value like forestay pin goes through CDI shackle holes okay.

One of the things that really helps with the furler is to loop its line around it above the drum, pull the furler line forward around a bolt in the mast holder in the pulpit, and lead the line straight back to the port side winch. This lets us keep the furler drum up off the deck, and much of the furler foil and headsail weight off the mast, from the cockpit. It may even provide a slight pull to help raise the mast, but that's not the point of doing this. I may have seen this trick somewhere on this forum before, so if someone deserves credit for it, thanks.

I double-checked this morning and neither of the BWY pins fit in the furler shackle under the drum. One of the BWY pins measured 0.243" and the clevis pin in the shackle measured 0.232". I didn't get the inside measure on the shackle holes, but it's safe to say they're less than 0.243". Google says 6mm = 0.236220472" so that's probably what my furler shackle is.

I've got an email into BWY to see what they have to say about this, but haven't heard anything back yet. Will probably wind up drilling the shackle.

I drilled my shackle to be the same size as the deck fitting. There is still ample material and I've seen no stress problems with it.
