Favorite Competitors to the 26M

This thread got me thinking....
Are there any truly comparable sailboats to the

from other manufacturers? I haven't looked at new boats in many years, and would be curious what others would say the actual competitors are against a new Mac today.
Obviously, there's not much for other PowerSailers, but are there any other sailboats with comparable accomodations and similar prices? For that matter, does anyone manufacture an outboard based cabin cruiser? Just thinking out loud... wondering what else folks would consider.

I know only one boat of design very simillar to Mac26. It is named Odin 820 or Mast 28 (same boat, just diffrerent names). It is about twice the price of Mac and not quite popular in US.

Lancer 27, maybe? Though I'm not sure how big a motor it can take. But the claim of speed in excess of 20 mph must come from a big motor. I don't think trailering would be as smooth. BTW, the Lancer is no longer made but you can still find them on the market pretty cheap. Not my cup of tea, however.

The
Tide 28 looks like a superior boat, similar to a MacX, but costing 34,950 incl. VAT.

nice photos on their site, boat looks great.
.....for somewhere around $62,000 USD

Zavala,
First question- Not that I have seen for the price range, trailerability, size, and powering ability. Others mentioned some that compete in several of those aspects but not all aspects. Price is the biggest variable in the boats previously mentioned. Hunter and Catalina make trailerable water ballast boats that compete fairly well in sailing, trailering, accomodations and somewhat in price, but not in powering. Mac has a niche to themselves right now.
Others have answered the second question. I would add the
Telstar 28 trimaran to that list, but again not in the same price range (by a factor of ~3 equipped), and the accomodations are slightly smaller (sleeps 4- but does the Mac really sleep 6?). It seems to sail well and power well (outboard based). I don't imagine it trailers very easily either.

Here's my review of the Odin 820 if you're interested. The Telstar 28 is also nice and have been through it twice now at the Annapolis Boat Show.......however accommodations are somewhat cramped.

Flicka and the Diana 24. Are good boats. However it is like compairing a red apple to a green one. Nothing has the price, speed and ..... as the Mac 26 for under $ 40g new.

MacGregor presents good BOATS...Ive owned the 26S, and the 26X. They sail well, and feature nice interior accomodations, ease of trailering, and upkeep is simple. ONLY PROBLEM is the TRAILER quality...kinda limited since theyre not galvanized. OH WELL...a new TRAILER completes a good combination...some in my MARINA have either Galvanized or Aluminum trailers. The standand IRON TRAILERs rust BADLY !! The NEW 26M models at my MARINA have "SATISFIED" owners...one fella installed a generator, AC, amazing set of electronics, up dated the HEAD, etc. << spent above $40,000. and isnt FINISHED YET.

Competition?

After looking at a couple of the contenders to the MacGregor, aside from price the
Tide 28 is likely the best IMHO. The
Odin 820/Mast 28 both share the same shortcomings of the
Hunter models in that the transom design does not make efficient/effective use of available space the way the
Mac 26M or
Tide 28 do. I personally see the sloped transoms as a waste of prime real estate space that could be put to better use in the cockpit, deck, or interior.

I own an Odin 28/ I do not agree with this. To the contrary, the back deck has been exceptionally useful for boarding the boat from the dinghy, or the reverse, boarding the dinghy from the boat. It has been helpful for doing "in the water" maintenance on the motor, using the swim ladder, stepping off the stern to a dock or the beach if stern to, etc, etc. FWIW

IMHO the price points make comparisons like this moot. If you consider a Mac and dont reject it outright, my guess is you would buy it on price alone.
I dont see what the point is of comparing it to a 60k something else.
The comp for me would be a good used 1980 keelboat at a 20k price point - but that means giving up trailering, versatility, etc...none of which makes sense for me right now.

The best point is that in order to come close to an

or

you have to pay a lot more
$$$, makes me feel so much better about the

purchase I made.

The transom space of the Odin 820 is also not wasted in that inside it is the 25 gallon internal fuel tank and space for a bank of batteries if you wanted them there ................or in Jeff's case.......the head pumpout tank

.............and hey !! it's a galvanized tandem trailer to boot !! For what you get for the money, it is not that much more expensive. You guys really need to see one sometime......that's what did it for me at the Cleveland Boat Show two years ago. They have been trying to get it into the Annapolis Sail Boat show the past two years, but there is never any new vendor space........at least for a newcomer like this. I owned a Mac 26x before this and loved that boat............but I'll stay married to the Odin !! Having just spent 3 weeks on it going down the Erie Canal and then sailing Lake Champlain, the honeymoon still ain't over.

Well, that's where I was coming from in strting the thread. Althought the competing powersailers are higher dollar, it seems like there shoul dbe an equivilent pure sailboat -- or cabin cruiser that offers something similar for the money.
PS -- So far I like the Nimble Boat suggestion the best. But my quest in this thread is purely scientific.... I like my

just fine for now.
