I stumbled across this looking for "Alaska sailing". This is good reading for armchair sailing. I'm going to send him something just for lifting my spirits after a week with the flu.

On a similar vein, here is the story of a circumnavigation of Ireland:

That was a very good read, Richard, even if I did sort of fast forward through his philosophy sections. Thanks for posting the link.
What I find as interesting is the rest of his web site, where I find he traded up to a 37' Crealock sailboat, but then switched to a powerboat, buying a new 37' Nordic Tug.

It's also interesting this half-million dollar boat had quality issues, such as poor port light installation, resulting in leaks.

I still have a sister who lives in Juneau. She was concerned that I bought a sailboat hopingI would sail it up there someday. She says there are more sailboats there now than 30 years ago. It's the chop, and dangerous narrows along the Alaskan coast that may keep Alaskans sailboat wary. That or just because of a long standing trawler tradition?
I remember being up there in the 70's sitting on a trawler chatting with some fishermen. I brought up fibreglass and sailboat in the same sentence, and spend the next three hours hearing drunken sailors tell me how how completely insane I was.

I was really enjoying the read, now it looks like the site is down. Anybody know if the story is in print? Anybody have a copy?
